Getting to know Karen Keys

Karen Keys specializes in helping clients with chronic illnesses, including long-Covid, diabetes, IBS, fibromyalgia, and more. I hold enduring compassion for the human experience, especially when the body presents its own challenges. Drawing from a wide range of treatment tools, diverse life experiences, and skills, I am here to assist you on your journey. Having experienced my own share of personal successes and failures, I understand the power of a helping hand. You can expect our work to be a solid, steady partnership that responds to your evolving needs, using empirically proven strategies to cope with both mental and physical challenges. My goal is to help you rebuild yourself while bringing your life into greater balance. I earned my Master's in Mental Health Counseling from City University of New York, Hunter College, and hold a Bachelor's degree from the University of California, Davis. ******************** Other therapists in our practice are accepting new clients. Our practice is dedicated to social justice for all human beings. Feel free to contact me to explore who would be the best fit for you within our team. We have a wide range of skills and experience helping clients with: - depression & anxiety - stress reduction - trauma - relationships & unhealthy patterns - life transitions - LGBTQ and trans people - chronic health conditions & health coaching - self-esteem - substance use

What should a new client know about working with you?

I have advanced training in working with mind and body using evidence-based approaches for mental and physical well being. I am a licensed mental health counselor and also a certified health coach. I am trained in Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction and integrating Behavioral Health in Primary Care Medicine. I am familiar and supportive of common diet and lifestyle changes as part of your overall treatment. We will also explore how your emotional health interacts with your physical health and how you can improve both by improving one. I also help people adjust to perhaps new limitations and how to work comfortably and assertively with your medical providers. We have a licensed Nurse Practitioner in our practice who is available for those you would like to discuss medication support for your mental health. I aim to connect with clients in an authentic and accessible style and to help people integrate parts of their lives into a fully vibrant whole. I use proven techniques and training, unwavering support, common sense, and a laugh when we need it.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

Clients can expect to describe their challenges in their own words, while I focus on listening and learning. In our first few meetings, I may ask some questions about how you are feeling, your physical and mental challenges, and perhaps something about your current treatment plan. Our work is an ongoing transparent partnership toward your goals. As we move forward, I will follow your lead in deciding what your biggest concerns are. I will shape my suggestions and our work, based on your priorities. I typically draw from Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, interpersonal therapy, mindfulness-based stress reduction, and tools to promote your own change process.

It was a great first step. Talked through much of what I wanted to and was made sure we would continue on with more of what I'm concerned with.
It was a visit that gave me a hope again. I have hesitated to schedule this appointment, I have a addiction issue and if you are reading this and thinking about talking to Dr Keys do it. It might save you too
Karen is fantastic! She recently helped me through a tough time, and I am eternally grateful. She didn't just treat me like a patient but like I was a real person going through "stuff". She listened with sensitivity, respect and thoughtfulness. She helped me see things from different perspectives, and helped me determine a path for healing and moving on. After seeing Karen, my life is better, and I feel more in control. I totally recommend her without any reservation.
