Getting to know Karen Muhammad

I am a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist as well as a Clinical Psychotherapist running a private practice. I hold a Bachelor's degree in Psychology, along with both a Master's and a Doctorate in Marriage and Family Therapy. My expertise lies in couples and relationship counseling. As a Gottman Relationship Checkup therapist, I incorporate various therapeutic modalities such as Internal Family Systems, Emotion-Focused Therapy, Solution Focused Therapy, and Bowen Family Systems into my work. My approach to therapy is consistently strength-based, enabling clients—whether individuals, couples, or families—to tap into their inner resources. I offer services to a wide range of clients, including couples, families, individuals, and groups. My focus is on couples therapy where I assist partners in overcoming communication barriers, resolving conflicts, and addressing issues related to intimacy. The Gottman Relationship Checkup serves as an effective resource for couples by identifying both strengths and areas needing improvement within their relationship. This information aids in developing tailored therapeutic strategies. In my practice, I emphasize healing, empowerment, and self-awareness by tackling both the inherent strengths of clients and their mental health challenges through solution-oriented methods. As your therapist, my goal is to provide unbiased support that fosters your personal development and healing journey. The provider is a “Marriage & Family Therapist" and their license numbers is 37FI00221800

What should a new client know about working with you?

My approach to therapy is listening, supportive, and goal-oriented, promoting openness, inclusivity, and respect for the client's autonomy. Treatment goals are developed with the client to ensure their needs are met in a supportive, non-judgmental environment. Clients are the authors of their own lives. The therapeutic relationship is strongly tied to the client's narrative. As a therapist, my role is to listen and highlight the client's strengths to problem-solve, develop personal goals, and empower their agency of self.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

During our initial sessions, we will explore the presenting issues and then collaborate to create a strength-based goals plan.
