“I was reluctant about counseling, but my worries went away as Kayla made a very safe and open environment to talk. I truly felt like I was being heard, and she was very mindful of making sure she understood my viewpoint and events we were discussing. She was personable and professional. A good practice of hers that I appreciated was discussing thoroughly strategies to implement in relation to the things in my life I wanted to work on.”

Getting to know Kayla McDonald

The provider is a “Licensed Social Worker" and is currently working under the supervision of a licensed practitioner. Their current employer is Soul Wellness NYC. Adolescence and adulthood can be exciting and overwhelming. Navigating academic pressures, identity exploration, relationship challenges, and major life transitions can be daunting to tackle on your own. I specialize in supporting adolescents, young adults, and their families as they face anxiety, depression, trauma, identity concerns, and the stress of achievement and belonging. In therapy, we’ll explore moments of vulnerability and discomfort that can contribute to self-doubt and isolation. I work collaboratively with individuals and families to uncover ways to strengthen communication and bring clarity to relational dynamics.

What should a new client know about working with you?

My experience working as an assistant dean of admission at Princeton University, coupled with my counseling experience at an independent K-12 school and at Princeton University’s Counseling and Psychological Center, has informed my deep understanding of the pressures students and families face in academic, social, and developmental spaces.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

I take an integrative, trauma-informed approach grounded in person-centered, strength-based care. Drawing from CBT with a multicultural and feminist lens, I support diverse individuals exploring gender, sexuality, cultural, and intersectional identities. I am committed to making mental health care approachable and welcoming for everyone.
