Kenneth Parker, LCP

Psychologist
CA
I'm a Licensed Psychologist and Marriage & Family Therapist. I am an Illinois native who has been in CA for more than 40 years. My life has been blessed in that my parents lived into their 90s and were married for 68 years. Plus I connect with my 3 siblings bi-monthly via Zoom. After the divorce, I still enjoy excellent relations with my ex-wife and her husband. My approach My approach to initial assessment is systems (esp. family systems). I most often utilize Cognitive Behavioral Therapy as an intervention. I believe it is important to understand the client in context, including thoughts, feelings & behaviors. In recent years I have become interested in Attachment Theory and how one's attachment style influences choices and relationships. My focus Basic tenet: try to 'meet the client where they are'. Reserve judgment until enough data is gathered to be useful. Want to identify client strengths as well as areas for improvement. I don't believe that one intervention works for all. Rather, I'm more interested in developing a strategy that works for that particular person. My communication style I try to listen attentively and communicate directly. I aim to be responsive to client issues & concerns. I do utilize self-disclosure (as appropriate) for the purpose of engagement. I also use humor to reduce tension and lighten the mood as needed. In other words, I take the work seriously tho not always myself. Genuineness. My journey to mental healthcare In college, my major was psychology. I wanted to learn how to assist people such as my cousin who was hospitalized with a then-called nervous breakdown. Along the way, I realized the importance of self-insight. My grad school mentor was a follower of Albert Ellis [Rationale Emotive Therapy]. Concomitantly, I was trained in Client-Centered approaches.
