Kia is a staff therapist at Sentient Psychotherapy, a female-owned, brick-and-mortar private practice group in Lower Manhattan. She holds an MEd in Mental Health Counseling and a Master's in Behavioral Sciences, both from Columbia University. Working with Kia: You work hard in relationships and at the workplace to meet your own high standards. But feelings of inadequacy and dissatisfaction often creep up despite your accomplishments. What should a new client know about working with you?

I understand how difficult it can be when you are torn between what your family wants and what you want for yourself. It's exhausting to constantly self-protect, control others’ perceptions, and struggle to fit in. As a first-generation immigrant from China with years of experience working across diverse cultures, I understand what it means to have faced a lifetime of biases and the issues that come with it. Whether it's self-doubt, anxiety, perfectionism, difficult family dynamics, relationship or career issues, I'm here to help you succeed.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

Using Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), Psychodynamic therapy, and Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy (CBT) to help you learn practical skills to reduce symptoms of anxiety, dissatisfaction, and depression, resolve inner conflict, and increase assertiveness and a sense of fulfillment in yourself and your life.
