Getting to know Lana James

Lana James is a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist (LMFT) with EMDR training who helps individuals and couples strengthen their relationships, recognize their existing strengths, and challenge patterns that contribute to distress or disconnection. Her goal is to create an affirming, empowering, and welcoming environment where clients can explore difficult experiences, develop greater self-awareness, and work toward meaningful change. Lana's therapeutic style is inquisitive, collaborative, and strengths-based. She integrates approaches including Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), Internal Family Systems (IFS), Attachment-Based Therapy, Gottman Method, Narrative Therapy, Person-Centered Therapy, Relational Therapy, Schema Therapy, Somatic Therapy, mindfulness, and coaching. She also brings an EMDR-informed perspective to her work. Lana supports adults experiencing anxiety, depression, low self-esteem, identity concerns, college or career stress, relationship challenges, sexuality concerns, and difficulties with self-care or empowerment. In couples therapy, she works with partners navigating conflict, premarital concerns, newlywed transitions, parenting, blended families, interracial or interfaith relationships, and ethical non-monogamy. Her practice is LGBTQ+ affirming, sex-positive, and kink-informed. Lana believes therapy should honor each client's identity, relationships, values, and lived experiences. Whether working individually or with partners, she helps clients recognize strengths, understand recurring patterns, improve communication, and develop practical tools for healthier relationships and greater emotional well-being.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

1. Initial Consultation We begin by discussing what brings you to therapy, your current concerns, relevant experiences, strengths, and what you hope to change or better understand. 2. Identifying Goals Together, we'll establish meaningful goals based on your needs, values, relationships, and priorities. 3. Personalized Treatment I tailor therapy to you rather than relying on a one-size-fits-all approach. For couples, we'll also explore relationship dynamics, communication, and shared goals. 4. Creating an Affirming Space I provide an open, empowering, and affirming environment where you can explore emotions, identities, relationships, and experiences without judgment. 5. Exploring Patterns We'll identify thoughts, behaviors, emotional responses, and relationship patterns that may contribute to anxiety, depression, conflict, or disconnection. 6. Integrating Therapeutic Approaches Depending on your needs, we may use EMDR, ACT, CBT, DBT, IFS, Attachment-Based Therapy, Gottman Method, mindfulness, Somatic Therapy, or other approaches. 7. Building Skills We'll develop practical tools for emotional regulation, communication, boundaries, self-esteem, coping, and healthier relationships. 8. Applying Change We'll work on bringing insights and new skills into your daily life and relationships so progress extends beyond therapy sessions. 9. Reviewing Progress We'll regularly discuss what's working, recognize growth, and adjust our approach as your goals or needs change. 10. Continued Empowerment My goal is to help you strengthen your existing resources, challenge negative patterns, and develop the confidence and skills needed for lasting growth.
