Hello, I'm Larry J. Colby, a Licensed Professional Counselor and a Licensed Secondary Education Teacher. My journey in mental health and education began with a dual major in Speech Communication and Psychology at Eastern Michigan University, where I earned my Bachelor’s in Secondary Education in 2003. I later completed my Master’s in Mental Health Counseling at Walden University in 2013. My counseling internship took place at a sexual abuse center and a private alternative school, providing me with invaluable experiences that shaped my approach to therapy. I started my teaching career in Michigan, where I taught English to struggling students at a career center. My passion for education led me to teach high school AP English and ESOL in Puerto Rico, as well as honors English and inclusion classes in Virginia. These diverse teaching experiences have enriched my understanding of the unique challenges faced by adolescents and teens. With 8 years of experience in residential settings, 5 years in Intensive In-home Counseling, and 3 years in outpatient counseling, I bring a wealth of knowledge to my practice. I have also provided staff training in verbal de-escalation and presented on play therapy and trauma-informed care. My training includes certifications in Certified Clinical Trauma Professional (CCTP), TF-CBT, CBTE, DBT, EMDR, Sandtray, PCIT, Theraplay, and Child-Centered Play, Additionally, I am trained as a co-parenting trainer and have studied Orton-Gillingham multisensory learning and the Lindamood-Bell Language Learning theory. My mission is to use my interpersonal connections to help others build a foundation for discovering health, empowerment, love, and prosperity in their lives. I believe that healing requires setting aside blame and focusing on relationship building and problem-solving. Whether you are dealing with anger management, anxiety, depression, PTSD, stress, trauma, ADHD, or eating disorders, I am here to support you. I also specialize in children's and adolescent mental and behavioral health, as well as military and veteran support. I look forward to working with you and helping you navigate your journey towards healing and growth. Let's build a path to a healthier and more fulfilling life together.
