Getting to know Leandrew Aponte

Leandrew is a mental health counselor with a limited permit working under the supervision of licensed psychologist Dr. Sheila Chiffriller. He earned his Master of Science degree in Mental Health Counseling from Pace University. Leandrew employs a combination of cognitive behavioral, strength-based, and solution-focused approaches when working with his clients. With experience working with adolescents from diverse backgrounds, he understands the importance of creating a space where individuals feel heard and comfortable enough to begin their journey toward becoming their actualized selves. Outside of work, Leandrew enjoys spending time on a wide range of interests: collecting and reading comic books, watching movies with family, socializing with friends, and playing various sports.

What should a new client know about working with you?

I believe that one of the greatest factors in instilling change is the collaborative nature we cultivate. Trust and security are the backbone of collaboration and so it is important to know that the space used is free of judgment and is dedicated to the client’s time. Clients can expect sensitivity to their respective problems and cultural backgrounds while also feeling comfortable enough to express themselves in a therapeutic manner. My main place of expertise is working with children and teens, young boys, trauma counseling, and couples.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

Using evidence-based practices, my approach is eclectic, and solution focused. My process usually carries a focus on working with the youth, adolescent and young adult population. Common topics discussed and worked through include emotional regulation/dysregulation, suicidal tendencies, anxiety, behavioral problems, and self esteem issues. Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), psychoeducation and Solution Focused Behavioral Therapy (SFBT) are just a few therapeutic approaches employed where we work collaboratively to ensure the client can effectively handle similar problems and situations in the future.
