Getting to know Lijia Li

Many people I work with carry pain that doesn't have a clear story attached to it. Not trauma that arrives with a named event, but the kind that accumulates in what was consistently absent — emotional needs that went unmet, an interior life that went largely unwitnessed, years of learning to function well while something quieter remained unaddressed. This is terrain I am particularly drawn to. But trauma also arrives with weight and name — with events that are known, remembered, and still living in the body and in relationships long after they've passed. In both, I am interested in the same thing: the patterns that form beneath the surface of a person's history. The relational templates shaped by what happened, and by what never did. I pay close attention to what emerges between us — the parts that show up quietly, carrying what words haven't yet reached — because these often hold something older than what is being spoken about directly. This work is slow. But in my experience, it holds. My approach is integrative, drawing from IFS, relational, and somatic. I work in English and Mandarin. I am currently accepting new clients in New York under supervision. **Please be advised that Lijia has a provisional license as a psychotherapist with the title of Mental Health Counselor – Limited Permit and works under the supervision of Karolina Zurawicz, LMHC-D at KDMHC, PLLC as an employee.

What should a new client know about working with you?

Sessions are conversational, but not unstructured. We might talk about what's been happening in your life, but I'll also pay attention to patterns — how things show up between us in the room, not just in the stories you bring. You don't need to know where to start. Many people begin with something like "I'm not sure what to say," and we go from there. This work moves slowly and doesn't follow a script. What tends to matter most is building a relationship where more of you can gradually come into view — at your own pace.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

The first few sessions are about getting to know each other — what brings you in, what you've been carrying, and what you're hoping might be different. I don't follow a rigid structure or move through preset topics. As we settle in, sessions become more exploratory. I pay attention not just to what you share, but to how things show up between us — patterns, hesitations, moments that seem to carry more than what's being said. Over time, this kind of attention tends to surface things that other approaches miss. Change here is gradual, but it tends to reach somewhere real.
