Lily Eckstein, LMSW

Psychotherapist
85 5th Ave, New York, NY
I am an NYU trained therapist who knows that therapy is not about finding quick answers to difficult problems and that there is no one-size-fits-all approach to the complexities of life. It is easy to provide prescriptive solutions to other people’s problems, but it is much harder, and far more meaningful, to get to know someone deeply, to understand what they want from life, and what they don’t. I approach every child, teenager, adult, couple, or family with curiosity, not a checklist of symptoms or diagnoses. For nearly a decade, I’ve worked with individuals and couples, adolescents and adults — all with different stories and unique goals for therapy. My work is guided by a deep respect for the complexity of the human experience and a commitment to meeting clients where they are. I have worked with those trying to conceive, as well as expectant and new mothers and know how hard it can be to balance responsibilities to your partner, expectations from your family and friends, and your own emotional well-being. Therapy for new mothers (maternity therapy) is incredibly under-emphasized in our culture, but it can make all the difference when trying to navigate IVF, reconnect to your partner, or understand the feelings that come up throughout pregnancy and childbirth.

Getting to know Lily Eckstein

What should a new client know about working with you?

Having worked at Mount Sinai, Weill Cornell, and New York Presbyterian Hospitals, I also know how debilitating chronic illness can be, both physically and mentally. Chronic illness or injury is not solely a matter of physical well-being: constantly having to make doctor’s appointments, manage medications, and be so dependent on those around you can take a toll on the way you understand yourself and place a stress on your relationships. Therapy can help integrate illness into your identity without letting it define you. It can help you reclaim agency, communicate your needs more effectively, set boundaries, and explore the difficult emotions tied to life, death, grief, and control. Life isn’t lived alone and many of my clients come to me for couples therapy or relationship counseling. I hold advanced training in couples therapy, including certification in Intimacy From the Inside Out (IFIO) — the couples application of Internal Family Systems (IFS). IFS is a neuroscientifically informed model that understands the mind as modular, composed of different parts with different perspectives and motivations. Couples therapy is a bit different from individual therapy, in part because most people come to couples therapy when something is already going wrong in their relationship; my training as a couples therapist will help us get to work right away, addressing the conflicts that are separating you and your partner.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

In both my hospital experiences and in private practice, I have years of experience in working with children and adolescents, particularly during times of transition. Whether it is moving from one school level to the next, preparing for college, or coping with shifts in family dynamics such as divorce or the loss of a loved one, I support young clients in navigating these challenging experiences. Adolescence is a time marked by a strong drive for autonomy, coupled with a deep need for support and validation. This duality can often feel confusing — both for teens and their parents. I take seriously my role in helping teens explore their developing values and identities, while also working collaboratively with parents to navigate the often delicate balance of providing appropriate support. I find this work especially meaningful because many patterns and behaviors are still forming during these developmental years, making early intervention both impactful and rewarding. I also have experience supporting children facing chronic illnesses, where symptoms are often newly emerging. This allows for a focused exploration of root causes and triggers, and creates opportunities for real growth. Helping young people build resilience and adapt to their unique circumstances is central to my approach as a therapist. I view therapy as a collaborative process centered on helping individuals realize their fullest potential. It’s not about labeling someone as the problem, but rather about understanding how the problem came to be, how it fits within the broader context of their life, and working to address it head-on. Together, we’ll work to identify personal goals, deepen self-awareness, and create meaningful change.
