Getting to know Lorraine Baum

I have been working as a social worker for 15 years. I hold a Master’s in Social Work from Stony Brook University. My clinical focus is with adults ages 25 and older, helping manage and reduce symptoms of anxiety and depression, providing support during planned and unplanned life transitions, and resolving and healing hurts from complex trauma related to challenging relationships with parents or family of origin. I consider my therapy style to be creative and collaborative. I strive to provide a curated therapy experience that is highly individualized to meet the unique needs of each patient. My work is grounded in evidence-based practices. I have a certificate in advanced studies of CBT from NYU and am a level one Certified Clinical Trauma Professional. Other areas of focus include romantic relationships, work and financial stress, and parenting issues.

What should a new client know about working with you?

I am what is known as a directive therapist. My approach is structured. We will set the goals for treatment and I will create a treatment plan to reach those goals. Sessions are highly participatory and collaborative. I will ask questions but most of the talking will be done by you. I will always have an agenda ready so there should be few times that there is a lull in the work. Your agenda items will always come first in a session as improving your life week to week is the overarching goal of the therapy we will do together. I enjoy working with adults between the ages of 25 and 70. If you have never entered therapy I would love to be the one to introduce you to its benefits. If you have been in therapy with someone and have not been satisfied I would enjoy the opportunity to help you try the experience again hopefully with better results.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

I see therapy as a four phase process. The first phase is intake and goal setting. I have created an intake questionnaire that I administered for our first session that takes an hour and a half. It is comprehensive and by the time we are through I will know much about you and your life so we will be able to move right into working on what you have identifies as the main areas of concern. After the fourth or fifth sessions we will set goals and I will write a detailed treatment plan. You will not have to worry about following the treatment plan. That is my job. But after six months I will ask you to review the plan with me and usually clients find that they have worked on all of the goals and objectives and interventions and they are able to note the changes in their life in those areas. The second phase of therapy is the intensive work. This is the time I will be teaching you new skills and inviting new perspectives to help you restructure some of the thoughts you may be holding that are interfering with your happiness (CBT) or we will be creating a fear ladder to help you confront your phobias or social anxieties (CBT). We may delve into neuroscience and begin to talk about the "anxious mind" and using metaphors to help us live with our anxiety as a friend and stop trying to get rid of it or control it (ACT). If the situation calls for it we will create timelines to explore the past and rework some narratives you may have been carrying that are hurting you. Restructuring our narratives often relieves us of guilt and shame and can help us move past feelings that we have been permanently distorted by the past. The third phase of therapy comes when you are showing up at sessions mostly sharing your successes and triumphs in the areas you came into therapy for. At this point I might suggest we move to every other week sessions. The final phase of therapy is usually monthly sessions to make sure you are ready to return to life on your own.

I’ve been working with Lorraine for over three years, and I can honestly say I’ve never had a therapist as genuine, professional, and compassionate as her. She saved my life—I truly mean that. Without Lorraine’s support, I would never have healed or come to understand the depth of my pain. Today, I feel more confident, self-aware, worthy, and curious than I ever have. I am incredibly grateful and blessed to have chosen her to walk with me through my struggles. Anyone who has the opportunity to work with Lorraine is truly fortunate. She is the kindest, most respectful, and caring therapist I have ever known. Thank you, Lorraine, for saving me. I am eternally grateful.
Working with Lorraine has been nothing short of life-changing. Unlike other therapists I’ve worked with in the past, Lorraine takes a truly solutions-focused approach. She doesn’t just listen—she actively helps you move forward, offering practical tools, insightful book recommendations, journaling prompts, and actionable strategies tailored to your goals. Her guidance and advice is compassionate, grounded, and deeply empowering. I’m incredibly grateful to have found her and cannot recommend her highly enough.
I’ve been seeing Lorraine for close to 6 months. She was recommended by a friend and I can see why; she is extremely professional, supportive, and helpful. The past couple of years, I’ve had triggers in my life, that I now know are related to past traumas. Lorraine helped me to see that what I was going through was not unusual and with a better understanding of it and a willingness to work on it, could be healed. I am forever grateful to Lorraine and her expertise. Whenever I visit with her, I know there’s a person who’s on my side, ready to provide healthy guidance; someone who gives helpful perspective and suggestions on how to move through life’s challenges. Knowing Lorraine is there for me, when I need her, gives me great confidence in my day to day life. I feel lucky to have found her.
We’ve been seeing Lorraine as our couples therapist for over 2.5 years, and we cannot recommend her highly enough! She has been instrumental in helping us strengthen our relationship and improve our communication. Her approach is warm, supportive, and insightful, and she always provides practical tools that have truly transformed the way we interact with each other. We’re so thankful for the positive impact she’s had on our relationship, and we always look forward to our sessions with her. If you’re looking for a couples therapist who genuinely cares and provides lasting results, Lorraine is the one!
I can't begin to share how AMAZING Lorriane is. In times of crisis it's so important to find someone who can not only help stabilize the situation but help you build yourself back even stronger. I've had the absolute privilege of working with Lorriane for the last 9 months and couldn't imagine where I would be without all of her dedication and support. Not every therapist is the best fit for every patient, however I encourage you to at least give Lorriane a chance and I'm sure she will change your life like she changed mine - I guarantee it's only a matter of time until patients are waiting in line to get a chance to work with Lorraine. Thank you Lorriane - you are amazing!
I had a lot of trauma in my life …..and Lorraine was my partner over a couple of years getting myself to a place of peace and acceptance that I always hoped for, but didn’t think possible . Thank you
I love Lorraine. I trusted her immediately and felt incredibly comfortable speaking openly during our first session. She’s intuitive, relatable and super intelligent. My mind was in a horrible state of extreme confusion + uncertainty, and I really needed help dealing with the passing of my first child and a drawn out divorce from a jerk. Lorraine took an active role and worked with me toward change and understanding all of its components, she listened, and I listened. And now, I am more confident than ever, started up my career again, and have become an extraordinarily fantastic mom:-) I genuinely think she saved my life.
I really loved working with Lorraine. She is a compassionate and understanding therapist who creates a safe and supportive space. Her insights and guidance have been incredibly helpful and I looked forward to our sessions each week!
When I first met with Lorraine, I was like a ship lost at sea, adrift in a fog of confusion. But Lorraine, with her unwavering patience and insightful guidance, became the lighthouse that steered me towards clarity and purpose. Her ability to listen deeply and understand the nuances of my struggles has been nothing short of transformative. With her help, I have been able to uncover layers of myself that I never knew existed, and address issues that had kept me stuck in a seemingly endless rut. Her sessions are a safe haven where vulnerability is met with empathy, and every breakthrough, no matter how small, is celebrated as a victory. Lorraine’s approach is both professional and deeply personal, making each session feel like a collaborative journey towards healing and self-discovery. I have learned to focus my energy on what truly matters and to let go of the burdens that were weighing me down. Thank you Lorraine ! Angelica
We are incredibly grateful for the compassionate care our son received from Lorraine Baum. Our son struggled with health anxiety, making it difficult for him to trust the process of recovery from an operation. Lorraine’s patient and empathetic approach created a safe space for him to express his fears and concerns. Through therapy sessions, Lorraine gave him techniques not only addressed his anxiety but also empowered him with tools to manage it. We have seen remarkable improvements in our son's confidence and overall well-being. Her dedication and expertise have truly made a positive impact on our family's life.
I can’t say enough great things about Lorraine. She is not only my therapist but a partner in my growing and healing. She truly listens and hears you. When speaking to her, I never feel rushed or that I’m running out of time. She is incredibly insightful and helpful. Her guidance is invaluable. She has never made me feel judged or pressured. She keeps me focused, enabling me to look deeper into myself becoming more aware of myself, thoughts and actions. Lorraine continually offers great resources to help me through my daily challenges suggesting books, sending links to articles and even suggesting apps. I have been to therapy before but I have never been able to make the connections and awareness needed to fully see change. I have seen dramatic change in myself.. And so have others around me! I'm a work in progress, forever grateful to be under Lorraine's care.
Lorraine is an incredible therapist. She is so empathetic and knows when a client needs validation or inspiration for growth/ specific treatements such as CBT or ACT. It is not just the importance of validating but if you have ever felt like you intellectualize your feelings and other therapists have left you feeling stuck because “you already know what your supposed to do/ already know why your feeling this way”, then I would highly suggest Lorraine to feel like your making progress. Her approach to treatment is brilliant.
Lorraine is professional, caring, joyfull and felt more spotaneous then most therapist I have seen before. I felt at ease talking with her.
Lorraine was an incredible therapist during my year working with her. She is empathetic, understanding and communicative, was truly a joy to work with, and a bedrock to my healing process. Thank you for all you do!
I was looking into therapy during my college years after really struggling with anxiety and finances. I had been to other therapists before but was never really able to open up or feel comfortable. Lorraine is the only therapist I plan to go on if I ever need assistance in my life down the line. But thanks to her I have been doing much better in managing my anxiety on my own and dealing with my family issues. She assisted me in family therapy and helped me make a safety plan. I feel I would not be where I am today without her guidance. I’m proud of how far I’ve come and she has helped me get here.
