Getting to know Dr. Lucas Sohn

I am a clinical psychology post-doctoral fellow at Bryant West Psychology available online (NYS) and in person (Midtown West NYC). I work with children, adolescents and adults in individual, couples, and group psychotherapy. My work includes those who suffer from depression, anxiety, trauma-related challenges, relationship difficulties, uncertainty and conflict around identity, and conflict within the parent-child relationship. I have a special interest in helping university-age and early career adults, those facing the challenges of being of minority status, particularly , Asian and Asian-American individuals, and those navigating what it means to be a man in our complex society. I work from a psychodynamic perspective - I believe in the importance of exploring early childhood experiences and the way those experiences have shaped the way we understand ourselves and others. A significant part of my work is the exploration and valuing of emotions. I believe that much of what we suffer from or get stuck on is rooted in avoidance of overwhelmingly painful or disturbing feelings. My role is to accompany and support you as you make contact with these feelings and the messages they carry. Connecting with these feelings reduces internal conflict, helps you act on the things that are important to you, and allows you to act more authentically in relationships. I firmly believe that the relationship between provider and patient is a crucial ingredient to successful therapy. I welcome patients to share how they feel throughout therapy. The more we talk about misunderstandings, the more we learn. . I learn something new from everyone who I work with – I am excited to learn from you, too. I am available for in-person and virtual appointments. If you are curious to hear more, please reach out. I hope to hear from you soon.
