Dr. Lyles Swift-Farley, PhD

Psychotherapist
1430 Broadway, Ste 1510, New York, NY
I am a well-trained and compassionate psychotherapist who works with individuals and couples to build stronger communication and greater harmony in relationships with friends, family, colleagues, partners and, importantly, one's self. My clinical specialities include helping to relieve feelings of numbness, disconnection, anger, depression, and anxiety and create balance around intrusive or ruminative thoughts, impulsivity and substance use. I also work well with those who are interested in enhancing their self-awareness, seeing emotional growth and insight as an essential part of their life’s journey. I support all genders, sexualities (including kinks, fetishes), and relationship styles (including variations on monogamy and polyamory) with a particular speciality in working with LGBTQ+ individuals and couples who are exploring their identities and sexualities. Part of my work involves helping clients build curiosity around their lives as children. Our early relationships with caregivers and community have taught us unique strategies for how to receive love, express our needs, and protect ourselves from rejection and hurt. These early patterns often form the blueprint for the ways we feel about ourselves and how we relate to others as adults - and it is in the understanding of these early templates that we can find the keys to healing and change. Together, in a warm and supportive space, we can uncover these early templates and grow toward new, more aligned ways of connecting.

What should a new client know about working with you?

I approach therapy with warmth and directness; and I like to use humor when appropriate. I am both calm and curious; I will make statements and ask questions to take us deeper into your experience. The quality of our relationship is important to me! I often use how we relate to each other as a roadmap to help you build stronger connections with yourself and others. I obtained my PhD in Clinical Psychology from The New School for Social Research with a concentration in Substance Use and Mental Health Counseling. I am an alumna of the Trauma and Affective Psychophysiology Lab with research examining shame, dissociation, anger, aggression, and childhood trauma. I have provided therapy and assessment services in a variety of settings including college counseling centers, community mental health centers, private practice, outpatient and in-patient hospital settings, and chemical dependency programs.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

As a relational psychodynamic, couples and individual therapist, I help you see the patterns that shape your relationships, emotions, and thoughts so you can feel more present, grounded, and in control of your life. I listen closely to understand who you are while remaining curious about the deeper meaning embedded within your narrative. I help you build a deeper connection with yourself so you can have more fulfilling relationships with others. While lasting psychological change takes time, I aim to help you feel better sooner so that you have the energy to continue taking the risks required for healing. I specialize in treating complex developmental trauma (i.e., difficult relationships with caregivers during childhood) which can manifest in adulthood as persistent difficulties in affect regulation, intimacy and interpersonal relationships. Please reach out if you may be interested in working together!

  • Sliding scale: Offers lower out-of-pocket fees on an individual basis, typically based on your ability to pay
  • Files your insurance claim: You pay the session fee upfront and the provider files the claim for you, so you can get reimbursed directly without worrying about the paperwork

More information on payments and coverage

Bryant West Psychology works with most insurance plans (whether in-network or out-of-network) to make the financials easy, hassle-free, and paper-work-free for you. We can bill your insurance for you, and you can pay us any deductibles and co-pays by credit card or through Zelle, as well as the old-fashioned ways, such as check or cash. In-Network: Our clinicians are providers in the following networks: Aetna and its affiliated insurances (Allied Benefit Systems - Aetna, Christian Brothers Services - Aetna, Health Scope - Aetna, Meritain, Nippon, Trustmark ) and student health insurance at NYU, Columbia, New School, and Fordham. Your in-network insurance company sets our fees, co-pays, and deductibles, making our services more affordable. We will discuss this with you. Out-of-Network: We bill all insurance companies, such as United Health Care, Oxford, Cigna, Blue Cross/Shield, and Beacon (to name a few). Depending on your plan, your insurance may pay up to 80% of our fee (and sometimes more). We will do our best to work with you to make payment arrangements that won't break the bank—that is, your bank.
