Getting to know Marcela Torres-Noguera

I am an experienced bilingual (Spanish-English) clinical social worker with over 15 years of experience supporting families and children from diverse ethnic and social backgrounds through various life transitions. Born and raised in Colombia, South America, I earned my Bachelor's degree in Psychology from Universidad de los Andes (Los Andes University), where I discovered my passion for clinical work. In 2002, I moved to the US to pursue my Master's in Social Work at the Silberman School of Social Work, Hunter College, City University of New York, and I have been living in NYC ever since. Since earning my MSW, I have worked in a variety of settings, including outpatient mental health, hospitals, and child welfare programs at nonprofit agencies. I have experience supervising clinicians, leading family team conferences, and serving as clinical coordinator for The Court Team for Babies-an innovative Manhattan program that helped babies and mothers reconnect and strengthen their bonds while separated. Before becoming a licensed social worker, I worked as a Preventive Services case planner, providing home-based counseling and case management to families from diverse cultural and ethnic backgrounds. I helped them navigate systems such as health, education, and the courts. I also specialize in treating compulsive buying disorder, with over 10 years of experience working individually and facilitating in-person and telecoaching groups locally and internationally. Early in my career, I was part of Project Liberty, which offered mental health screenings, outreach, and resources to New Yorkers after the 9/11 terrorist attacks.

I can't speak highly enough of Marcela. From the moment I met her she put me at ease. She is warm, knowledgeable, compassionate and professional. I so look forward to our sessions. I've gained so much insight and she's inspired me, helped me gain confidence and given me hope. I wholeheartedly recommend her!
Marcela is kind, honest, professional, and well-informed about how to care for her clients. She never makes me feel like her approach is "one size fits all"; rather, she listens intently, takes highly specific notes, and maximizes our time by circling back on recurring themes or issues that she's noticing patterns in, which is helping to amplify my own self-awareness and connection within. I am supremely lucky to have found myself in treatment with Marcela, and I give her my highest endorsement.
Marcela was always professional and modeled fairness as well as kindness throughout all our sessions. She made my husband and I both feel heard and assisted us in problem-solving through issues we otherwise could not resolve alone. Her guidance and advices are everlasting. My husband and I still use the skills she taught us, which has been keeping our marriage healthy. There's no doubt should we encounter another issue, before questioning the end of our marriage, we would much rather return for Marcela's services to help us continue our life together.
Siendo la peimera vez que le hablo a un terapeuta, Marcela me hiso sentir muy comodo imediatamente. Aparte de ser super amable, tambien es bilingue, que alluda mucho al expresarme.
Marcela is very patience and attentive. She’s been fiery flexible and understanding of life’s happenings. She’s a great listener and has very insightful advice for whatever situation you’re dealing with. She’s also bilingual which makes our sessions more rounded. She’s understanding and has experience with issues particularly immigrant people or those experiencing diaspora. Marcela es paciente y atenta. Es muy fácil hablar con ella. Sus consejos son muy buenos y al punto. La recomiendo de seguro.
