Maria Fernandez-Gomez, LCP

Psychologist
VA
I am a Licensed Clinical Psychologist with a PsyD in Clinical Psychology from Indiana University of Pennsylvania who loves helping individuals reach their best potential. I often approach therapy with a compassionate view and structure, providing plenty of psychoeducation about the process. I like to explain the why and the science behind exercises and skills for each clinical presentation. I also want my clients to have a safe space and feel comfortable if a specific skill is not going well for them. I often focus on trauma-related disorders, including sexual and combat trauma. My approach I consider myself a cognitive-behavioral therapist. I want to explain the connection between thoughts, feelings, and behaviors when there are specific triggers. I help individuals balance their thoughts based on different situations. I also like to practice third-wave treatments, such as Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) and mindfulness training. The focus of ACT is helping clients live a values-based lifestyle. My focus I often work with young adults up to around 45 years old. I am comfortable working with depression, anxiety, adjustment concerns, relationship stress, family stress, trauma, panic attacks, personality disorders, and clients from different cultural backgrounds. My communication style I create an environment that is calm and compassionate. I am often told that I am softly spoken, which helps with mindfulness training exercises. Clients often describe me as easy to talk to, which helps them feel comfortable opening up. I try to challenge my clients while meeting them at their level of progress. My goals for you I like to create goals from the beginning of treatment and revise them as needed. It is important to me that my clients feel they are making positive progress on something meaningful to them. I often utilize the client?s values to help create treatment goals. My first session with you For the first session, I want to get to know my clients.
