Getting to know Maria Luisa Molina

Starting therapy can feel intimidating — especially when you’ve learned to appear strong while privately struggling with anxiety, trauma, or depression. If you’ve tried therapy before and still feel stuck, I am here to support you. I am a bilingual (English/Spanish) Licensed Clinical Social Worker and EMDR-certified therapist providing virtual therapy across New Jersey. I specialize in EMDR therapy for trauma, PTSD treatment, anxiety, depression, and healing from childhood abuse, neglect, sexual assault, and intergenerational trauma. Many of my clients are first-generation adults and high-functioning professionals who carry invisible wounds from the past. Together, we work to identify how unresolved trauma impacts your nervous system, relationships, and sense of self — and use EMDR to help your brain reprocess painful experiences so they no longer feel overwhelming. My approach integrates EMDR therapy, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), and mindfulness-based strategies to promote lasting emotional healing — not just short-term coping. I currently accept Aetna, United Healthcare, Oscar, and Oxford and provide virtual sessions throughout New Jersey. If you’re looking for a culturally responsive trauma therapist in NJ who can help you move beyond survival mode and into meaningful healing, I would be honored to support you.

What should a new client know about working with you?

When you begin working with me, our first 1–2 sessions focus on assessment, goal-setting, and stabilization. Before starting EMDR therapy, I ensure you understand how trauma impacts the brain and nervous system and that you have the tools to regulate emotional responses. Education and nervous system regulation are foundational to my work. My sessions are collaborative and flexible — you are the driver, and I support and guide you at your pace. EMDR therapy is never rushed. We move through each phase intentionally, ensuring you are emotionally prepared. If we need to pause, strengthen coping skills, or revisit stabilization, we do. Safety and readiness always come first, guided by assessment tools and clinical judgment. As a bilingual therapist (English/Spanish), I incorporate conversations around family expectations, generational patterns, cultural identity, and how these experiences shape relationship dynamics, boundaries, and feelings of guilt. By session 3 or 4, many clients say, “I didn’t realize my body was responding to old memories,” or “I’ve never understood my brain and nervous system like this before.” My goal is not just symptom relief — it is helping you understand your mind-body connection so you feel grounded, empowered, and in control of your healing.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

Our work begins with getting to know you — your history, your goals, and what feels most overwhelming right now. In the first phase of therapy, we focus on stabilization, emotional regulation, and understanding how trauma impacts the brain and nervous system. Many clients feel relief simply from learning why their body responds the way it does. I move at your pace. EMDR therapy is structured, but our sessions are collaborative and flexible. We only begin trauma reprocessing when you feel ready and have the coping tools to stay grounded. A typical session may include processing current stressors, exploring relationship or boundary patterns, strengthening regulation skills, or engaging in EMDR when appropriate. I also integrate CBT and mindfulness techniques to support lasting healing. My goal is not just provide treatment or symptom relief — it’s helping you feel more regulated, empowered, and connected to yourself.

I had tried therapy before, but I still felt stuck in the same relationship patterns and constant guilt. Working with Maria through EMDR therapy helped me understand how childhood trauma and intergenerational experiences were shaping my present. I appreciated how intentional and paced the process felt. I now feel more confident setting boundaries and less controlled by anxiety.
I came in seeking PTSD treatment and support for high-functioning anxiety. I didn’t realize how much my nervous system was constantly on alert. Maria’s approach to trauma therapy helped me understand the mind-body connection in a unique way. EMDR therapy felt structured but safe, and we moved at a pace that felt safe for me. I feel more regulated, grounded, and hopeful about my healing.
I’ve been working with Maria for several months now, and it’s been one of the safest spaces I’ve had for deep healing. She’s patient, grounded, and knows how to hold space without rushing the process. Through EMDR, I’ve been able to open up about things I’ve never shared out loud before—and I’ve always felt safe doing so. Even when I’ve hesitated to bring up more personal or faith-related topics, Maria has never made me feel judged. She listens with compassion and helps me process in a way that feels steady and respectful. Working with her has helped me become more aware of my body’s responses, uncover emotional patterns, and begin releasing things I didn’t even realize I was carrying. I’m genuinely grateful for the work we’re doing together.
Very good therapist. She is certified in EMDR.
