Getting to know Mariellen Anderson

I began my career in social work by working in domestic violence shelters. I believed in the empowerment model where counseling was developed from the patient's needs. Many of my patients had very low self esteem and I worked with them by noticing their strengths and resiliency. I also became very interest in trauma treatment. In graduate school, I founded a project providing critical incident debriefings to jurors after murder trials. This project was featured on Dateline. I worked with both survivors and offenders in domestic violence and noticed the correlation with substance abuse. I led groups for chemically dependent victims of domestic violence and did outreach for domestic violence programs at treatment centers. I spent 5 years providing risk assessments for child access on the Protection Order calendar for King County Superior Court. This led to me to develop a full time private practice providing guardian ad litem services for contested child custody cases. I worked with the military providing assessments and treatment for domestic violence, child abuse and substance abuse. I was also the chosen therapist to work with survivors of military sexual assault. I love to read and also go to the movies. I am volunteering to screen documentaries for the Tacoma film festival. I have previously volunteered for the multiservice center food bank. I have a strong belief in giving back to the community.
