Getting to know Martin Delacruz
In NYC, it can be challenging to find a therapist you can connect with. I am a first-generation American-born man of Dominican descent. I've been working in social service for over 25 years now, including ten as a Clinical Therapist. I hold a Master's in Social Work from Columbia University. As a Clinical Therapist, I've had the opportunity to counsel many individuals, including those suffering from depression, anxiety, substance abuse, and domestic violence.
Because of my upbringing, the idea of acceptance of all individuals is a very important value for me. I welcome members of the LGBTQ-IA community, as well as individuals of any and all cultural and racial identities in my practice. I bring a non-judgmental stance to every session, for every client who comes into my office, regardless of how they identify or their life experience. I will treat you equally, whether you have a history of incarceration, abuse, or need to address troubling symptoms such as anger, depression, or anxiety. I want to know your story. If you seek help to create positive change in your life, that's what I'm here for.
What should a new client know about working with you?
As a young man, I became more and more curious about what makes people behave the way they do and that curiosity led me to a study of psychology. I later sought work in the social services, in order to make a difference. I strongly believe that my varied experience helps me work to gain an understanding of my clients on a deeper level. And, I feel my curiosity helps me in working with my clients in this regard as well. In my practice, I help clients explore their lives, through the lens of Cognitive Behavior Therapy (CBT), as well as Psychodynamic Therapy Theory. I am truly driven to work with individuals whose youth and adolescence have had an indelible impact on their present functioning. It is my belief that effective therapy is one that supports clients in recognizing their own capabilities and potential, highlighting the individual’s strengths to help mitigate barriers they encounter in their lives.
What is your typical process for working with clients?
My hope is to assist you in achieving a deeper understanding of the effects that your early life experiences may have had on you. What I’ve learned from doing this work is that this can allow you to gain skills that can help you navigate your thoughts, and modify your behavioral and emotional responses. This can come from an understanding of your relationship patterns and the possible conflicts they present. Let me help you.
