Getting to know Mary Ruth Govindavari
All individual and couples sessions are conducted virtually.
Mary Ruth is a psychotherapist with a Master’s in Social Work from Hunter College, City University of New York. She understands the mind, body, and spirit connection and believes her role with clients is to guide them in healing deep wounds and awakening to their own inner wisdom and strength. Her style is compassionate, interactive, and relational. For couples, she targets communication and intimacy to help build more authentic connection.
Mary Ruth approaches her clients with a trauma-informed lens, recognizing that trauma affects individuals on familial, societal, and ancestral levels. She incorporates somatic and mindfulness techniques into her sessions and is trained in the modalities of ACT, psychodynamic therapy, and EMDR.
What should a new client know about working with you?
My goal when working with clients is to ensure I'm creating a space that is interactive, nonjudgmental, and curious. You are welcome to come as you are.
What is your typical process for working with clients?
My initial goal is to fully understand what you are seeking to gain out of therapy and what support you may need in order to achieve your goals. I find the most important thing is to be able to listen to you with curiosity and to ensure I am capturing an accurate picture of what you are conveying. As our work together progresses, we will then identify concrete plans to work on.

My experience working with Mary Ruth has been incredibly positive. As someone who’d always been skeptical of the claim that everyone benefits from therapy, I am now, very happily, that annoying person explaining to anyone who will listen how much therapy has changed my life for the better. Our conversations altered how I perceive and approach challenges in all spheres of life. My relationships with others and crucially, myself, are slowly evolving towards greater acceptance and kindness. This is all thanks to Mary Ruth’s insight and patience - highly recommended!
