Matthew Casper, LMFT

Psychotherapist
25 E 10th St, New York, NY
Our work together will be a creative and collaborative process. I believe the past can inform our present patterns of thought and behavior. But I won't keep you spinning, needing to know the why of every feeling and impulse. I’ll let you know when knowing the why will elicit deeper change. I have a background in the arts and work well with active and creative minds. And I know the challenge when the creative goes corporate. Whether you’re an actor or an accountant, I’ll help you find balance, keeping you connected to your creative self. I’m sex-positive and anti-shame. Although shame (like most things) isn’t all bad, but it’s usually used to control and suppress. Which sucks. Fear isn’t all bad either. It keeps you from running into traffic. But it’s usually what’s hiding in the shadows, spewing hatred towards self and others, preventing the change you need. I’ll unshackle you from fear that does not serve you. Therapy is an additive process. I’ll give you new insights and tools and choice. It’s not my goal to get rid of anything about you. But we’ll dismantle the protective mechanisms that you once needed, but are now outdated.

What should a new client know about working with you?

I’m modest but confident. Optimistic but grounded. And not afraid to swear. Or feel deeply. I’m aware of my limits, but willing to take risks, drawn by the instinct to grow. I see art as public dreams and dreams as private myths. I go by Casper, because the name feels right to me. And as a gay kid who grew up in the late 80s, I was influenced by fantastic music and acid washed jeans. I’ve written a series of books for kids and a trilogy of books for teens, traveled the states in a van named Julius and played villains and nerds on TV. I forgive easily and have a deep pool of empathy. And I’m well practiced at setting boundaries while speaking with compassionate honesty. I have been a Psychotherapist for over 20 years, my work informed by Psychoanalytic, Jungian, Narrative and Humanistic Psychology. I am licensed to practice in both California and New York.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

The first appointment will be a 15-20 minute free phone consultation to see if I'm a right fit for what you're seeking and needing.
