322 8th Ave, Ste 802, New York, NY
As a counselor based in humanistic and relational cultural theory, Matthew respects you as a person who knows yourself best. Throughout life, circumstances leading to disruptions in well-being can produce self-doubt, a negative view of self, and low self-worth. Even through these times, each person still has autonomy and the ability to make effective decisions that fit in accordance with their lives. Matthew sees a counselor as someone who can provide guidance, hope, and empowerment to lead you in the direction of your choice. A major part of his work is to expand self-awareness so that you can live in a more intentional way that aligns with your values. Throughout therapy, Matthew offers compassion and encourages each individual to act in ways that are true to themselves with the belief that self-discovery affords greater authenticity. Stemming from a relational cultural background, Matthew finds it essential to consider how a person’s unique lived experiences, cultural background and exposure to trauma, oppression and discrimination contribute to the problems and concerns one is facing. His collaborative approach regards each person as a unique individual which means our time together will be customized to suit your needs. Creating a trusting therapeutic relationship sets the foundation for personal change and he looks forward to building bonds with you. Matthew identifies as a gay/queer cis man who has been living in New York City for 15 years. Coming from a performing arts background of 10+ years, he brings a singular set of interpersonal skills to the counseling field. Matthew received his master's from Saybrook University and his long-term aspiration is cultivating connections with LGBTQ+ people and survivors of trauma. He has worked with people of diverse cultural backgrounds and those who have been disproportionately marginalized and oppressed. He is currently continuing education to become a certified trauma professional.
