Meghan Nayyar, LMHC

Psychotherapist
NY
I'm accepting new clients. This practice is self-pay only. I provide monthly documentation for reimbursement if you have out-of-network benefits. As a first-generation American woman and child of Indian immigrants, I see wellness as inseparable from societal, political, historical, and cultural systems and therefore approach therapeutic treatment with an intersectional and multicultural framework. My clients are often BIPOC, immigrants, adult children of immigrants, and those with LGBQ+ and TGNC identities, among others, who experience depression, anxiety, relational stress, family conflict, life transitions, workplace stress, intergenerational trauma, and systemic discrimination. We work together to address their mental health concerns through the lens of their unique intersection of identities. I hold a Master's degree in Counseling from New York University and a Bachelor's degree from Wesleyan University. Attending therapy is an act of self-care, and searching for a therapist is a meaningful first step. I know how difficult it can be to connect with the right therapist for you. If you feel we might be a good fit or you are curious to learn more, please schedule an appointment or consultation.

What should a new client know about working with you?

In my virtual practice, I hold supportive and non-judgmental space for healing, growth, and self-discovery for those with multiple marginalized identities. My therapy style is tailored to your needs and incorporates techniques from several evidence-based therapeutic frameworks, including psychodynamic therapy, cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT), acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT), mindfulness, person-centered therapy, and multicultural and feminist therapy. We are both active participants in the therapy relationship, collaborating to meet your goals through validation, exploration, and empathetic challenging. Sometimes our process looks like drawing connections between your past and your present. It often includes accepting and reframing your experiences, thoughts, and feelings. We may also work to unlearn thinking or behavior that doesn't serve you and work to develop new cognitive and behavioral skills and strategies to improve mental health, cope with life’s challenges, and foster healthier relationships.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

The first few sessions will consist of getting to know one another and assessing if we are a good fit. I will likely ask about your mental and physical health history, important relationships, current symptoms, current coping strategies, therapeutic goals, childhood and family dynamics, work history, and more to gain context about you and your life. We will also set specific goals for therapy so that I can tailor my approach to meet your needs. Depending on your goals and preferences, we may focus more on behavioral or cognitive changes to practice in the moment or we may focus on exploring the what, how, and why of your thoughts, feelings, and experiences to deepen your understanding of yourself.
