“Melanie is the first therapist i have had that I fully trust. She is open and receptive and is well-versed in CBT and trauma. She communicates clearly and empathetically not just scrawling on a pad to answer intake questions. I’m lucky to have her as part of my treatment team.”

Getting to know Melanie Ritter

So many of the people I work with describe feeling like their emotions take over — one moment they’re fine, and the next they’re caught in anxiety, sadness, or anger that feels impossible to manage. Others share that they keep replaying painful experiences, stuck in old patterns that make relationships harder than they need to be. Some feel the weight of never feeling “good enough,” even when they’re accomplishing so much on the outside. When you sit with me, my focus is on slowing down that storm. I’ll help you notice what’s happening inside, make sense of it, and build skills that help you feel more steady and in control. My style is active, collaborative, and practical — I won’t just nod and listen. Together, we’ll look at what’s happening in your life right now and start creating changes you can feel. I also bring mindfulness and mind–body practices into sessions when it’s useful — not in a “one-size-fits-all” way, but as tools that can help you feel more grounded and connected to yourself when words aren’t enough. Therapy with me is about making room for all of you — the parts that feel messy, the parts you’re proud of, and the parts you might not show anyone else. That’s where real change begins.

What should a new client know about working with you?

Working with me means you’ll have a therapist who is both warm and direct. I’m not someone who will just sit back quietly — I’ll be engaged with you, offering feedback, reflection, and concrete tools when they’re useful. At the same time, I’ll never treat you like a checklist of symptoms. I want to understand you — your story, your struggles, and the strengths you may not even see in yourself yet. My style blends structure with humanity. Some days, that might look like practicing new skills for calming your body or shifting your thoughts when they spiral. Other days, it’s about exploring the deeper patterns that keep you feeling stuck, or making sense of the emotions that feel “too big” to handle alone. I see therapy as a balance between practical strategies you can use right away, and a safe space to be seen, heard, and understood in your full complexity. Most of all, you can expect me to meet you where you are. Whether you’re coming in at a crisis point or simply feeling ready to grow, we’ll work together to create real, lasting change that feels meaningful to you.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

In our first sessions, I’ll take time to really get to know you — not just what brings you to therapy, but the bigger picture of who you are and what life feels like right now. Together, we’ll clarify what you’d like to shift or work toward, and I’ll share what I notice along the way so we’re always on the same page. As we move forward, our work is collaborative. Some sessions may feel practical — practicing ways to manage strong emotions, quiet racing thoughts, or navigate conflict more smoothly. Other sessions may feel more reflective, where we slow down to understand the patterns beneath the surface and how they connect to your past experiences. Over time, we’ll weave both together — giving you tools for the present while also creating space for deeper healing. You can expect me to be active in sessions: I’ll ask questions, offer observations, and gently challenge you when it helps you grow. My goal is that therapy feels like both a safe place to bring the hardest parts of yourself and a place where you leave with something you can carry into your everyday life.
