“After seeing a therapist for 6 years, I decided to switch in hopes of finding someone that would hold me accountable for my goals & actions, and help me to do deeper reflective work - all while making me feel safe and supported enough to do so. This isn't an easy balance to strike, and after spending 6 months with Melissa I can say she has nailed it. I've had several "ah-ha" moments that I didn't achieve in years of work with my previous therapist, and feel that all aspects of my life, career & relationships have improved with Melissa on my team. ”

Getting to know Melissa Paul

I am a licensed clinical social worker with a Master's degree in Social Work from New York University. Having gained experience in community-based mental health organizations throughout New York City as well as in my practice, I have clinical expertise in working with individuals, couples, and families facing challenges related to anxiety, depression, trauma, life transitions, career transitions, self-esteem, body esteem, illness, sexuality, parenting, infidelity, infertility, divorce, abuse, and financial hardship. I believe in the power of relationships to be a source of healing, and this will come through in our work together. My clinical approach focuses on how problems impact our ability to connect with ourselves and with others. I believe that connection is at the core of what makes us human, and when challenges arise, they stand in the way of what is most important in our lives. In our work together, we will use therapy as a way to create a connection to reduce life’s challenges.

What should a new client know about working with you?

I practice from an Anti-Racist stance, use a Health At Every Size (HAES) perspective and am a LGBTQ+ affirming therapist. I use Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, the Ackerman Relational Model, and Psychodynamic Theory in my clinical approach. I always practice from a warm, non-judgemental space to work with you and your needs. A typical session is conversational. I love to listen and talk with my clients about what is going on for them right now and support them through a curious mindset. I often ask questions and engage actively with clients during sessions.

Very thoughtful and insightful! Great therapist. Helped me a lot!

Melissa is an excellent therapist! She has made such a big impact on my life in the short time I have been seeing her. She is kind, open, and understanding. She is insightful but also steers me to think things through that I would not have without her help. Highly recommend seeing her!
Melissa is the best. At the risk of scaring her with the enthusiasm of my review, I am absolutely obsessed with her and I genuinely would not have been able to navigate the last year of my life without her. Therapy can be scary even in the most gentle hands, but Melissa has always made me feel totally supported and safe. She's helped me navigate an incredibly hard year with grace, empathy, humor and compassion. Melissa listens without judgement but isn't afraid to offer opinions about what I'm working through. She's incredibly insightful and as a millennial woman, it's been so helpful to feel like my therapist understands my experiences on a personal level and whose values reflect my own. Seeing Melissa has made me feel healthier, happier and equipped (or at least on the path) to handle whatever peaks and valleys come my way. And I *know* that probably sounds heinously cheesy, but it's true. She's the GOAT.
Melissa is wonderful - inquisitive, empathetic, and incredibly easy to speak with. Flexible with scheduling and always available when needed. Highly recommend!
Melissa is an exceptional therapist. Working with Melissa has been a transformative experience through and through. She is incredibly skilled and knowledgeable and approaches every conversation about any topic with compassion, kindness, and empathy. I’ve felt supported by Melissa since day one and have been able to make huge, positive changes in my relationships and professional life because of our work together. I can’t recommend her highly enough!
Melissa saved my life. She is kind, understanding, nonjudgemental, and easy to talk to. As a young millennial, I feel like she really "gets" me. She helped me work through issues at my own pace. I highly recommend Melissa!
Melissa is super thoughtful, patient and intelligent. She really listens and has as special ability to find source of an issue. She helps you understand your emotions and perceive the world around you more clearly. I always leave an appointment feeling better. I highly recommend Melissa - working with her has been a great experience for me and I suspect anyone who works with her will feel the same way.
Melissa is a warm and compassionate therapist. She supported me in better understanding myself and helped me to be more open and honest in my relationships. I always left appointments feeling heard and validated. I would recommend Melissa without hesitation.
Melissa is am amazing therapist - I never knew the true power of diligent therapy practice and with her guidance I changed my life. Melissa is kind and thoughtful practitioner and was able to help me through a truly difficult period in my life. I will be forever grateful.
I have been working with Melissa for going on 4 years now and it has been extremely transformative and helpful. She makes me feel super comfortable to share whatever it is that I need to process. She helps me uncover the root cause of the challenges I am facing and then works with me to learn new ways to navigate those challenges in the future. If you are considering therapy for support with life changes (career, family, personal, etc.), Melissa is truly awesome.
Melissa is incredibly professional and helpful. Sessions with her were always confidential and supportive, and they gave me important tools to heal.
I would recommend Melissa Paul to anyone looking for an empathetic and yet strong therapist. I am grateful for her thoughtful insights into the issues I bring to my sessions. She is a gentle and knowledgeable guide who eased me into the process as I had never had a therapist before her.
I've been seeing Melissa for over 3 years, the longest I've ever stuck with the same therapist. She is not judgemental and does a great job of challenging me in a way that helps me continue to grow instead of plateauing. She's the BEST!!!
I would highly recommend Melissa for therapy. She is incredibly warm, attentive, and knowledgable, and I can confidently say my work with her put me on a happier path.
Melissa is so attuned to what needs to be addressed, and the best way to approach it. She is present, inquisitive, and compassionate. Seeing her has truly been life changing for me and I couldn't recommend seeing her highly enough.
I had a wonderful experience working with Melissa. This was my first time working with a therapist, and Melissa made me feel supported and comfortable every step of the way. She listens with compassion, offers fresh perspectives, and gently challenges sticky thought patterns. She is a consummate professional. I highly recommed Melissa's services for anyone looking for support.
Melissa is a wonderful therapist. She creates such a warm, open, non-judgemental, trustworthy space. I went to her seeking help for what ended up being a big life transition but the experience was so much more, in change, growth, and living as a whole person. Cannot recommend her highly enough and I cherish the time and work we did together - it's been one of the most impactful relationships of my life.
I saw melissa for years and she helped me so much! The only reason I terminated was because I had to move. She helped attack my negative behaviors associated with a past trauma. She is very affirming, challenging, and is easy to build report with.
I got a lot out of our sessions and still use what we talked about, and really feel like working with Melissa has allowed me to have a better relationship with myself and deeper relationships with others. She always pushed me to dive a little deeper into what I was feeling and why, but always made sure I felt safe and comfortable with what we were talking about. I can't recommend Melissa enough!
Melissa is the greatest! She is responsive and flexible, something I was looking for given my unpredictable schedule. Melissa takes a multidisciplinary approach to her work which allows her to tailor the tools and techniques she uses/teaches based on what is most beneficial to me. Her ability to draw from my past to explain my present has been completely eye-opening. Melissa is warm and welcoming and I’m so glad that I found her!
