Getting to know Melissa Tully

As a counselor specializing in trauma, life transitions, grief, and anxiety-related disorders, I take an integrative approach that honors all parts of you. By acknowledging the connection between the body, mind, and spirit, I provide a space to explore unprocessed experiences. As these become integrated, you begin to reclaim your sense of wholeness. Through our work together, you’ll expand your emotional capacity, deepen your connection to yourself and others, and find greater ease in the present moment. As symptoms begin to soften, you start to feel more at home within yourself. If this resonates, I invite you to schedule an appointment and start the process of change.

What should a new client know about working with you?

I’m a licensed professional counselor and therapist in Virginia. With a Masters of Education in counseling from Virginia Tech, I’m a proud Hokie. My clinical mental health experience runs the gamut from counseling college students to leading groups in a substance abuse clinic to counseling individuals in private practice. Some of the modalities that you’ll become familiar with through our work together include Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT), Solution-Focused-Brief Therapy (SFBT), Cognitive Processing Therapy (CPT), and Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing therapy (EMDR). I also incorporate mindfulness and somatic experiencing tools to help you process the totality of your human experience. I believe that all good counseling is spiritual in nature. No matter what modality we use, the therapeutic process deepens your connection to your core Self. After counseling sessions with me, you will feel more whole, more connected, and more like your Self. You will feel home.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

The first couple of sessions will focus on understanding your current challenges, your particular history and background, and identifying your desired outcomes. I usually suggest beginning with weekly sessions, in particularly during 1-3 months. As symptoms decrease, patients usually move to bi-weekly appointments, or schedule sessions on an as-needed basis.
