Getting to know Michael Vella

Hi There!, Are you seeking a collaborative relationship with a therapist who will help you make sense of your current symptoms and challenges and figure out ways to address them? My goal as a therapist is to assist people in achieving greater self-understanding while supporting them to make necessary changes in their lives leading to personal growth. Frequently, patients come in with symptoms related to anxiety, depression, communication problems, and self-esteem. My recent professional experience has been working with individuals to address the symptoms and challenges that arise through life transitions such as difficulties in dating and relationships, breakups and forming new relationships, experiencing betrayal and infidelity, difficulty in the workplace or with professional relationships, career stagnation, conflicted family relationships, separation and loss, and overcoming experiences of trauma. I have a warm, active, practical, and direct approach to therapy and integrate strategies from Psychodynamic therapy, CBT (Cognitive Behavioral Therapy), and Interpersonal Therapy. Most importantly, my approach creates a judgment free environment that helps you gain a greater understanding of your relationship to yourself and the things around you in the full context of your life, while helping you explore needed changes. I believe effective therapy offers the opportunity for self-awareness, growth, and change. I am a licensed therapist/mental health counselor practicing virtually and serving patients in New York and New Jersey. I’ve been practicing for 9+ years and have worked with patients in a variety of settings that has given me a broad range of experience with different types of mental health challenges. I earned my Bachelor of Science degree in Psychology from Fordham University and a Master of Arts degree in Mental Health Counseling from Brooklyn College. Additionally, I have completed a two year Post-Graduate certificate in Couples Therapy.

What should a new client know about working with you?

Therapy will be tailored to you as an individual based on your challenges, background, and experiences. I work to make sure that I create a supportive environment to help you work towards your goals and welcome all feedback about what does and doesn’t work for you. It’s important that you take an active part in the process by sharing openly and we will work together to form goals for therapy. You can expect me to actively listen to you, ask thoughtful questions, and provide feedback, reflections, and observations. Additionally, you can expect to develop tools and strategies to assist you in addressing your symptoms.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

Initially, we will complete a consultation to determine if my experience and style match what you’re looking for and that you feel comfortable to work together. We would then complete a detailed intake to understand the various aspects of your life and get a better understanding of what contributes to your current challenges. From there, we establish a plan to address those challenges and facilitate change. I typically meet with people once a week during the initial phase of treatment.
