Getting to know Michaela Smith

I am a licensed psychotherapist based in New York City with three years of practice experience. I hold a Master's in Counseling from NYU Steinhardt School of Culture, Education, and Human Development, an Advanced Certificate in Mental Health Counseling from the University at Buffalo (North Campus), and a Bachelor's degree from the University of Virginia. These educational experiences have provided me with extensive knowledge and skills to work with a wide range of populations. I enjoy taking my dog for walks around the neighborhood, trying new restaurants, and spending time with my family. My practice is dedicated to helping those who are committed to identifying problems and stressors to promote personal growth. My ideal client may be an individual, couple, or family who is open to learning and growing from each other and committed to attending sessions consistently, even when challenges arise. Their needs will vary as life shifts, but they will communicate openly with me to continue moving forward. Together, we will set goals and adjust them as needs change and accomplishments are made. My clients are encouraged to embrace new goals and remain dedicated despite any potential setbacks. I have studied and utilized a number of specialties, including those listed on my profile. I aim to personalize and tailor my approach based on each client's unique needs and lifestyle to maintain a positive, productive environment. Please feel free to reach out with any questions or concerns. I am always happy to chat via phone or email to provide reassurance and clarification, ensuring we are a good fit before beginning to work together. I look forward to hearing from you!

I’ve been seeing Michaela for a while now and she is extremely attentive and helpful with what I have going on. I highly recommend her to anybody!
Michaela is the mental health professional I have been looking for! She is incredibly personable and empathetic, and has a very organized and communicative practice. Every session is consistent and leaves me feeling clear to take on the upcoming week. Would recommend her to anyone looking for a refreshing start to therapy!
Michaela is a wonderful therapist—very personable, easy to talk to, but still helps to guide and challenge my thinking when needed. She is supportive and helps to hold me accountable. I have seen her for almost two years and would highly recommend her practice. I have continued using her as a provider, even following her from her previous practice as I value the relationship we have cultivated during our sessions.
Friendly and very helpful

After a traumatic loss, Michaela helped me navigate my first experience with therapy, which I was reluctant to partake in, with care and such understanding. Working with Michaela is truly like speaking to a friend/ peer who relates and gently guides. She continues to create a safe space for my vulnerability as I navigate all aspects of life and take new steps on my mental health journey. Michaela also makes herself readily available and is extremely flexible with her time!
Michaela was the first new therapist I had in about 20 years, and I felt at ease immediately. She has brought new perspectives to my memories and current emotions and behaviors, while never dismissing the validity of my feelings. She provides ways to contact her between sessions should something significant come up, and is reliable (and flexible) with a weekly schedule.
Michaela is truly one of the best therapists I have worked with over the years. Her warm demeanor made it easy to open up to her as we built our relationship. In our work together, I have felt validated but at the same time she holds me accountable. She helps guide me towards the insights I’ve needed to make positive changes in my life. Michaela works collaboratively, she is supportive, and an excellent listener. She is also an analytical thinker and a persistent problem solver. Whenever I feel stuck, Michaela manages to steer me towards a breakthrough. When it comes to logistics, she is professional, accessible, and very reliable. I highly recommend her.
Michaela's always been great to work with - the perfect combination of conversational/friendly mixed with focused and interested in helping. We've built a great rapport over the last few years where we can focus on immediate issues when they're pressing, but she also knows exactly when to lift her foot off the gas, or focus on longer-term issues if that will actually be more productive. Honestly, the whole reason that I go to therapy is to just improve my mental health, and Michaela genuinely seems interested in, and beyond capable of, exactly that.
I’ve been meeting with Michaela for over a year and she has been incredibly supportive, professional, and friendly every week. She truly cares about her clients and checks in regularly!
My partner and I have had nothing but great sessions with Michaela. She always has a calm demeanor (even when I don't!) and has truly helped us work through some difficult issues. I leave our sessions feeling like we have come to some form of resolve or understanding with each other and that is thanks to Michaela and her helping us with our communication.
