Getting to know Michelle Palmer

The desire to help individual teens and adults, couples, and families face life’s challenges with positivity, resilience, strength, and curiosity is what led me to pursue a career in mental health counseling. I believe we all have the right to appropriately address the issues in our lives that cause us mental distress, and that with the right tools and support, we are all capable of obtaining greater self-knowledge to help us lead happier, healthier, and more fulfilling lives. I earned my Master’s in Mental Health Counseling from New York University, which has equipped me with a strong foundation to support clients effectively. As a counseling psychotherapist, I accept the notion that emotional pain, stress, imbalance, and discomfort are virtually unavoidable in life. In my work as a clinician, I strive to provide a safe space, free of judgment, in which you can freely explore the reasons why, and the ways in which, your responses to life’s challenges are maladaptive or no longer serve you. With compassion and empathy, I will meet you wherever you are on your journey towards healing and draw from a variety of therapeutic modalities to help you identify limiting thoughts, ideas, and patterns while arming you with the tools to replace them with healthy, affirming, and positive ones. Although my preferred theoretical approaches include psychodynamic, cognitive behavioral, humanistic, and positive psychology therapies, my aim is to partner with you in creating a unique palette of approaches that will best facilitate and maintain your shift to healing and wellness.

What should a new client know about working with you?

I earned a Masters degree in Mental Health and Wellness Counseling from the department of Applied Psychology at New York University that expertly prepared me to work with individual teens and adults, couples, and families suffering from mental illness including depression, anxiety, and mental trauma. I hold a law degree from the New York University School of Law and, prior to becoming a counselor, practiced both family and corporate law. My intimate familiarity with the unique challenges faced by high performing professionals in stressful work environments led to me working with clients who are peak performers experiencing burn out in fields from finance to the performing arts and elite athletics. I also hold a certificate in Divorce Mediation and enjoy working with couples and families including high conflict divorce, custody arrangements, co-parenting, narcissistic abuse and recovery, and post-divorce rehabilitation.
