Getting to know Michelle Schwab

As a therapist, I believe healing is possible when people feel fully seen, respected, and understood in all aspects of their identity and lived experience. I approach therapy with the understanding that our emotional lives are deeply intertwined with the social contexts we inhabit. Experiences shaped by race, culture, privilege, oppression, identity, and power dynamics can profoundly influence how we move through the world, impacting self-worth, relationships, and the ways we navigate stress or uncertainty. I see therapy as a space to explore these dynamics, deepen understanding, build emotional resilience, and create meaningful change. My commitment is to support you in developing a more compassionate relationship with yourself, strengthening your inner resources, and living with greater clarity, feedom, and intention. Whether you are navigating anxiety, identity questions, relationship challenges, trauma, or transitions, my goal is to create a therapeutic environment where you feel safe, supported, and empowered to grow.

What should a new client know about working with you?

Hi, my name is Michelle Schwab, and I am a mental health counselor in the state of New York. I earned my MSEd in Clinical Mental Health Counseling from St. John’s University and am currently pursuing a PhD in Counseling at Montclair State University, where I serve as a Doctoral Fellow with a focus on adoption research. I integrate Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Adlerian Therapy, and Narrative Therapy in my work, tailoring my approach to each client’s unique needs and goals. My clinical experience includes treating severe and persistent mental illnesses, addiction, and co-occurring disorders across partial hospitalization, intensive outpatient, and chemical dependency programs. I also have comprehensive experience supporting individuals within the Disability and Rare Disease communities and the LGBTQIAP+ communities, ensuring that therapy is accessible, affirming, and grounded in an understanding of the distinct challenges and strengths present within these identities.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

I strive to make the therapeutic process as transparent and supportive as possible. From the beginning, therapy with me is a collaborative experience: you are the expert in your own life, and my role is to help you uncover patterns, build insight, and develop skills that support your goals. My approach is grounded in anti-oppressive practices that prioritize your lived experience and honor the sociocultural contexts that shape it. In our early sessions, we will explore what brings you to therapy and begin to understand your personal history, strengths, and concerns. As we continue working together, we will deepen this exploration, examining emotions, identifying patterns in your thoughts and behaviors, and uncovering the internal messages that influence how you see yourself and relate to others. Goals may evolve as you gain insight or face new challenges, and we will revisit and adjust them at a pace that feels right for you. Throughout the process, my commitment is to co-create a therapeutic relationship that respects your autonomy, affirms your individuality, and centers your healing.
