“I cannot thank her enough for the support, kindness, and encouragement she gave me during one of the most difficult times in my life. After I was rejected from the nursing program I had worked so hard to get into, I was overwhelmed with anxiety and began to doubt myself and my future. To some, a rejection letter may seem like a small setback, but to me it shattered my confidence and self-worth. She created a safe, judgment-free space where I felt heard and understood. Through our sessions, she helped me process my disappointment, work through my anxiety, develop healthier coping strategies, and rebuild my confidence. Because of her support, I found the courage to apply again instead of giving up on my dream, and I was accepted into another nursing school. I will always be grateful for her compassion, patience, and genuine care. I wholeheartedly recommend her to anyone looking for a therapist who truly listens and is deeply invested in helping her patients heal and grow.”

Getting to know Mushda Afghanzada

You may be the person everyone else relies on, the one who seems to have everything together while quietly carrying stress, anxiety, self-doubt, or emotional exhaustion on your own. Maybe you've spent so much time taking care of others, meeting expectations, or trying to be strong that you've lost sight of your own needs. You don’t have to carry it all alone. Therapy can be a space where you feel genuinely heard, supported, and understood without fear of judgment or the pressure to have everything figured out. As an Afghan-American therapist, I understand how culture, family expectations, identity, and personal values can shape the way we experience mental health. Balancing multiple identities, navigating family responsibilities, or trying to honor your values while building a life that feels authentic can be both rewarding and overwhelming. My goal is to provide a warm, compassionate, and culturally responsive space where you feel empowered to make meaningful changes at your own pace.

What should a new client know about working with you?

I especially enjoy working with adults who are navigating anxiety, depression, burnout, perfectionism, people-pleasing, relationship concerns, life transitions, and self-esteem challenges. Many of my clients are high-achieving individuals who appear to have everything under control but feel overwhelmed internally. I also have a special interest in supporting women, first-generation individuals, and people from multicultural backgrounds who are navigating family expectations, cultural identity, or the unique pressures that come with balancing different worlds. Whether or not you share those experiences, you are welcome here. I earned my Master of Social Work from Stony Brook University and provide therapy in both English and Dari, allowing clients to express themselves in the language that feels most natural and comfortable. I strive to create a collaborative environment where you feel respected, understood, and supported every step of the way.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

No two people are the same, so therapy shouldn't be either. I tailor each session to your goals, strengths, and experiences while drawing from Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), and person-centered therapy. Rather than simply talking about problems, we'll work together to understand what's keeping you stuck, identify patterns that are no longer serving you, and develop practical tools to help you navigate life’s challenges with greater confidence and resilience. My hope is that therapy becomes a place where you not only feel heard and supported, but also gain the confidence and skills to create meaningful, lasting change long after our work together ends.
