Getting to know Nancy Burns

Do you often feel like your emotions are out of control? Do you experience anxiety, anger, depression, or mood swings? Do small provocations evoke surprisingly strong reactions, leaving you feeling agitated or irritable? Have you found yourself repeatedly involved in unsatisfying, perhaps toxic, relationships, or overwhelmed by caregiving, parenting, or job responsibilities? You might also wonder if past experiences or how you were treated as a child are affecting how you feel now. Early family dynamics shape how you view yourself and your place in the world, often having a lasting impact. If you feel hopeless or discouraged and nothing you have tried so far has helped, I want you to know it doesn't have to be this way forever. Therapy can help you make sense of your experiences, heal from trauma, and build more meaningful relationships. Please be assured that you don't have to go through this alone. Together, we can work toward the person you want to be and the life you want to live. Healing is possible, and life can feel more satisfying! I hold a Master's degree in Mental Health Counseling from John Jay College of Criminal Justice and a Juris Doctor from New York University, which inform my compassionate and comprehensive approach to care. ?What you do today can improve all your tomorrows.? - Ralph Marston

What should a new client know about working with you?

There is hope! Change is possible! Together, we'll work to set achievable goals for your treatment. With a focus on wellness, healing and growth, I will guide and support you at each step. Using elements of EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing), Somatic Experiencing, CBT (Cognitive Behavior Therapy), Mindfulness and other approaches, we will tap into the mind-body connection to lessen the impact of any traumatic experiences and reshape distressing thoughts and the emotions and behaviors that follow, leading to positive life changes. I offer a warm, compassionate, non-judgmental space where you can feel supported as you start showing up for yourself and begin moving toward becoming your best self. Take the first step today and let me help you create the life you’ve always dreamed of - a life filled with joy and inner peace! I look forward to supporting you on your journey. "Often, problems are knots with many strands, and looking at those strands can make a problem seem different" - Fred Rogers

What is your typical process for working with clients?

We will explore your current issues, coping methods, and the roots of your distress, as today's challenges often are rooted in unresolved childhood experiences which show up as present-day barriers to experiencing the fullness of life. Then, we'll focus on shifting patterns that keep you feeling stuck and on developing new ways to cope so that you experience more of what you desire in life. PLEASE NOTE: After booking your first session, please look out for an email from Therapy Notes/Therapy Portal. Please follow the instructions in the email to set up an account and complete the intake forms. Please also look out for a text from IvyPay asking you to set up an account there, through which we collect the fee for the session. THE THERAPY NOTES/THERAPY PORTAL FORMS AND IVY PAY SET UP MUST BE COMPLETED WITHIN 18 HOURS AFTER YOU MAKE YOUR APPOINTMENT. Thank you. "Your present circumstances don't determine where you go, they merely determine where you start - Nido Qubien

Nancy has a very warm demeanor, and makes you feel very comfortable talking to her. She’s a great listener, understanding, and I appreciate her guidance!
I am seeing Nancy over Zoom. It saves travel time, and I don’t have to sit in a waiting room with others. Not that there’s anything wrong with that, but you know what I mean. Nancy really helped me recently when I found out something terribly upsetting about a family member who recently passed away. She helped me understand how that family member’s behavior toward me and others affected my attitude and outlook on life, without me being aware of it at the time. With her help, I’ve been able to better control my emotions and self-image, and now I can enjoy being myself again.
I want to give positive recognition to my therapist, Nancy Burns. She is professional, compassionate, and extremely knowledgeable. Nancy helped me to focus on the root of the problem . Her skillful guidance helped me to arrive at a rational and attainable solution. I can entrust her with my daily struggles and I couldn't be any more grateful. I feel a great sense of peace thanks to Nancy, and recommend her wholeheartedly
Nancy has been such a comforting, motivating, and knowledgeable support in my mental health journey. She is truly nonjudgmental, which is so helpful when you feel shame or embarrassment, and helps me open up during therapy sessions which I've had trouble doing in the past. You really get the feeling that for Nancy, you're not just another client or another pile of paperwork--she thinks of all her clients as individuals and is deeply invested in helping each of them to find their way down the path to their best self. She's very patient with me and I don't feel like she's disappointed if I haven't "made progress" --she just wants to come up with a different way to help. If you're looking for a therapist I really can't recommend Nancy enough!
