“I first met Dr. Kurchanova at a point in my life when I felt lost and disillusioned. As soon as we started our work together, I felt relief and saw a path forward. In almost 2 years of sessions with Dr. Kurchanova, my eyes have opened to so much and the course of my life has been altered towards a far more authentic one. The space itself, the therapist, the approach- everything just clicked, and I hope it does wonders for you, too.”

What should a new client know about working with you?

Psychoanalytic therapy provides you with unique experience that focuses on uncovering your unconscious thoughts and lets you articulate them in a protected space. It gives you an opportunity to improve the quality of your life through better understanding of yourself and your relationships. I am dedicated to providing therapeutic and analytic help to individuals struggling with anxiety, depression, addiction, and problems with finding their path in life. I am also working with artists and other creative individuals who are having trouble starting and finishing their projects and with people who are going through major life changes. As a writer and a scholar, I am familiar with performance anxiety, having learned to overcome personal and creative blocks in my life and work through my own analysis. I am also a first-generation immigrant who was schooled in this country and knows about the psychological challenges of adjusting to new situations. I welcome people working in high-pressure and creative fields, as well as immigrants, people from different cultures, gender orientations and races. I work with adults, adolescents, children and their families. Apart from English-speakers, I welcome people who wish to communicate in Russian.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

I was trained in Contemporary Freudian Psychoanalysis, and provide talk therapy and attentive listening focusing on the patient's individual symptoms. Patient and I work together in attempting to understand the underlying reasons for a psychical disturbance and come up with strategies to overcome internal blockages and destructive behavior patterns.

Dr. Kurchanova was very responsive and flexible as my therapy needs evolved throughout my time in therapy.
I first met Dr. The space itself, the therapist, the approach- everything just clicked, and I hope it does wonders for you, too.
For me, it is the best Russian-speaking in-person therapist in NYC who takes my insurance. Natalia is a compassionate listener and also helps to look at the situation from a different angle. She has a nice office space. I would use her services again.
Natalia was very helpful in working trough work-related stress and anxiety and personal trauma related issued. She is a great listener making it very easy to have an open discussion about my concerns. She didn’t rush with recommendations and advice, leaning towards more informed interpretation and suggested solutions. Natalia was also helpful in understanding the billing and insurance coverage.
Dr Kurchanova was helpful throughout the entire process of treatment. For someone like me who was unfamiliar with therapy, she was always patient and guided me from first contact, meeting in person, insurance explanations, treatment, scheduling. For me, I wanted to meet face to face instead of online, and her office was a calm environment for personal connection. She was always punctual and professional, and let me know I could contact her outside our normal time if I needed to which was very kind. I have truly valued my sessions with her and would recommend her for anyone but especially if you are newer to therapy and anxious.
I am delighted to review Dr. Kurchanova, who helped me through a difficult time in my life! I saw her for almost a year while dealing with some depression and anxiety, and Dr. Kurchanova was incredibly helpful. She is a deeply empathetic listener, and was able to very quickly create a relationship and space where I felt free to explore the difficult elements of my life. Above and beyond her professional ability as a therapist, Dr. Kurchanova also has deep knowledge and understanding of art and the life of people who produce it -- this really helped us work through specific blocks in my life, and helped me come out with more insight, better understanding, and more trust in my own creativity. Finally, Dr. Kurchanova was also open to both in-person and virtual meetings, which made it easy to work with my unusual schedule.
Therapy with Natalia was not only my first experience, but also an unexpectedly transformative one. From our very first session, I felt seen, heard, and safely guided. When I once asked Natalia, “When does therapy end?”, she replied: “When your inner conflicts no longer interfere with your life here and now.” Thanks to our work together, this shift happened. Natalia acted as a highly skilled guide — helping me map out my inner world, identify key problem areas, and approach them from new, constructive angles. With her support, I was able to regain a sense of calm, clarity, and presence in my daily life. I now feel more grounded, less anxious, and more capable of living in the moment. I genuinely recommend therapy with Natalia — not only because she’s a great psychologist, but because everyone deserves the chance to experience this kind of growth and inner peace.
