“I’d spent many years in therapy before I started working with Noah. I had a lot of self knowledge but little insight into how to actually change. Working with Noah I’ve learned how to convert insight into action and break out of negative thinking patterns. I have been so much more productive and proactive since Noah became my therapist. He is warm, kind, witty and insightful. Noah is thoughtful and helpful and a great listener but very good at steering the conversation back when it goes off the rails! I highly recommend Noah as a CBT therapist.”

Getting to know Noah Clyman

NYC Cognitive Therapy founder Noah Clyman has dedicated his life to helping people work past problems for happier, more fulfilled lives, with a specific focus on anxiety problems and depression. After earning a Master's degree from New York University he completed intensive post-graduate training in CBT at the Beck Institute, including ongoing case consultation and supervision with CBT founder Aaron Beck, MD and colleagues. Noah is a certified cognitive therapy provider since 2010, after completing the rigorous certification process, which includes the close evaluation of the applicant's academic knowledge and clinical expertise before a certificate in CBT is awarded. Noah has also studied Acceptance and Commitment Therapy with Steven Hayes, PhD; Transformational Chairwork with Scott Kellogg, PhD; Compassion Focused Therapy with Paul Gilbert, PhD; & Trial-Based Cognitive Therapy (TBCT) with Irismar Reis de Oliveira, MD, PhD. After close supervision and evaluation, Noah became one of a few clinicians to be certified as a Trial Based Cognitive Therapist (TBCT). In 2012, Noah was invited to join the ACT Credentialing Committee. He serves as a "rater" for the Academy--one of the expert CBT therapists who review and score audio samples submitted by individuals applying for certification in cognitive therapy. Noah is also an ACT Certified Trainer/Consultant, which signifies that he possesses the skills to serve as a mentor, consultant, or supervisor for other developing cognitive behavioral therapists.

What should a new client know about working with you?

I specialize in goal-oriented treatment. My approach is active, collaborative, and practical. I can provide home visits when clinically indicated. Committed to Empirically-Supported & High-Quality Care Offering Emergency, Short-Term, or Long-Term Treatment Plans Available for virtual or phone sessions, when needed Provider of Supervision, Consultation, Evaluation & Treatment

What is your typical process for working with clients?

Even before your therapy sessions begin, I will have you fill out certain forms to assess your mood . One of the first things I will do in the therapy session is to determine how you've been feeling this week, compared to other weeks. This is what we call a mood check. I will then ask you which problems you'd like to put on the agenda for that session and what happened during the previous week that was important. Then I will make a bridge between the previous therapy session and this week's therapy session by asking you what seemed important that you discussed during the past session and what self-help assignments you were able to to do during the week. Next, collaboratively, we will discuss the problem or problems you put on the agenda and do a combination of problem-solving and assessing the accuracy of your thoughts and beliefs about the problematic situation. You will also learn new skills. Finally, we will discuss how you can make the best use of what you've learned during the session in the coming week, & summarize the important points of the session. As you can see, both therapist and client are quite active in this form of therapy.

Noah wasn't my therapist. He was actually my supervisor. And he was amazing! He really helped me become a better therapist.
I've worked with Noah on several stints over multiple years. He's incredibly flexible, both in-person and on Zoom.

Noah is the best therapist I’ve ever had, and I’ve been seeing therapists for almost 30 years. He is deeply engaged in his job, he’s empathetic, smart, and articulate. Every single time we have a session, I feel better at the end of it than I did at the beginning. I truly cannot recommend him highly enough.
Noah is remarkable, and literally changed my life. It took me many years to get up the courage to seek treatment for what was a lifelong anxiety disorder. When I finally took a friend's recommendation and started treatment with Noah, I immediately saw his expertise, his empathy and kindness--and his gentle humor. This makes a huge difference-- he is very serious in what he does, and at the same time has the ability to engage with you like an actual human being. He is hugely insightful, very patient, and goes at an issue from the double perspective of helping to alleviate the immediate suffering, while at the same time addressing the larger pattern, with CBT exercises and strengthening assignments to shed light on where those issues stem from and give you the tools to work at getting better. This hugely empowering, and he makes it clear that he is a partner in the work. He is always there for me. When I say he and the work we do changed my life, I mean it.
I’m incredibly selective when it comes to a therapist. I put off looking for a new one for a long time. But I had an instant connection with Noah. He listens and offers helpful suggestions and tools. Then it’s up to me to figure out which ones works the best. I would absolutely recommend him.
Noah is the absolute best. Hire him. Seriously. No, like, for real. It's truly a game changer to have him and his process in your corner.
I can't say enough about my interactions with Dr. Noah Clyman; he is professional, intelligent, and intuitive--the perfect formula to have an effective therapist! I was in a dark place after Covid and my Mom's death, and Noah provided the tools for me to move forward and flourish. In addition, Cognitive therapy is not about returning to the past; it's about moving forward and knowing what tools I need to move on with life. If you're looking for a Cognitive Therapist, search no more, Dr. Noah Clyman is your man.
I have been a client of Noah's for the past 5+ years, and I cannot recommend him enough. He is intelligent, kind, and creates a safe atmosphere that is always conducive to productive and effective sessions.
I have been in therapy for over 7 years and have met with over 5 different therapists . I started losing hope in the therapy process, but then I had one session with Noah, and learned more in one session than I ever have in 7 years. I have never had someone who understands my anxiety, social anxiety, and various other life challenges so well. He was incredibly empathetic, and for the first time in years, made me feel truly cared for and understood. Noah has made a significant positive impact in my life, and I can't express enough gratitude for how much knowledge and insight he has already shared with me. Also, I am a very practical person, and Noah has given me incredible tools, articles, exercises, and has recommended various apps that have all really benefitted me. Additionally, I have met with Dr.s/ psychologists in the past and they were nowhere even remotely close to as helpful as Noah has been for me! I can't recommend him enough!!
Noah provided clinical supervision to me as a step towards achieving my CBT trained therapist certification. He met and exceeded my expectations for a clinical supervisor. He was knowledgeable in the information and skills I was being trained in, as well as engaged me in activities and discussion to help deepen my understanding and apply these concepts to my practice. He answered all of my questions, was responsive, and punctual. Additionally, he was warm, kind, and reassuring, which was such a breath of fresh air for me while pursuing an advanced certification as a newer clinician. I could not recommend him more!
Noah provided me clinical supervision as I advance my professional practice of CBT. He has a lot of experience providing different cognitive behavioral treatments to address a wide range of difficulties that clients face. I learned a lot from him during our work together. Noah's clients are in excellent hands, and I highly recommend him as a clinician. His clinical expertise is astounding, and he is a joy to work with
I have known Noah Clyman as a colleague and a coach for CBT skills. He is smart, well trained, and effective at what he does. I have referred him to friends and colleagues who were looking for a therapist and they have all felt good about his empathy and effectiveness in treatment, I would highly recommend him as a therapist and a CBT coach.
Noah Clyman supervised me during my certification at the Beck Institute for cognitive behavioral therapy. He is exceptionally knowledgeable in a range of CBT interventions and truly helped me improve my skill level as a therapist. In addition, he was warm, kind and very personable. I highly recommend his services!
Noah is a warm, engaging therapist who brings a wealth of knowledge and expertise to all his clients. He is caring, professional and approachable. I would highly recommend Noah.
Noah has been excellent to work with. He approaches counseling in such a dynamic and intelligent way that I learn smart and useful tools I can bring into my everyday life. Noah demonstrates expertise and professionalism in each session and most importantly I immediately felt I could trust Noah. I would highly recommend Noah.
Noah is a wonderful, insightful, and supportive therapist. He strikes a great balances between providing knowledge and guidance and creating space for me to proactively tackle problems. He has helped me through the most challenging periods of my life, including an acute struggle with anxiety where he quickly helped me hone in on the root of the problem and begin addressing it within weeks. I’ve grown significantly through working with him.
Noah takes a caring, compassion approach to CBT - a practical form of therapy. He goes above and beyond in looking out for his patients and has a library of knowledge regarding how to approach any situation or feeling one may encounter. Working with Noah is a pleasure and I'd recommend him to anyone seeking CBT.
Noah is very effective, skillful, knowledgeable, and kind. I am a clinical psychologist and went to him for weekly professional consultation on CBT for a year. I will recommend him to any colleague and client.
I am a licensed psychologist in NY and NJ. I have been meeting with Noah for weekly clinical consultation/peer supervision for close to a year. I found Noah when I was looking for peer supervision to improve my skills as a CBT therapist. Clinically, Noah has broad and deep knowledge and expertise in cognitive behavior therapy and evidence based treatment for a range of presenting problems and diagnoses. He is one of the only certified diplomat/trainer/consultants/ credentialing committee members at the premier certifying body for the CBT therapists (the academy of cognitive therapy), is a certified CBT therapist through the Beck Institute and has been certified in many other evidence based treatments including Gottman Method and Trial Based Cognitive Therapy. As knowledgeable as Noah is, what sets him apart, and makes him such a joy to work with and learn from, is how humble, warm and supportive he is. Noah always made me feel comfortable telling him that I don’t understand something or taking risks of role playing a new technique I was learning. Noah is the consummate professional, always learning and keeping up with the newest research and techniques and as good as he is clinically, he is an even better human being. As an experienced CBT psychologist who has attended many trainings and has a wide network of clinical colleagues, I can honestly say, without hesitation, that Noah is among the best therapists and supervisors/trainers that I know. I highly recommend him as both a therapist for patients and clinical supervisor/consultant for therapists-in-training as well as for experienced, licensed clinicians.
I would recommend Noah to anyone struggling with their mental health. He's incredibly kind and generous. He offers practical, CBT-based, solutions-oriented guidance that really makes a difference. It's not an exaggeration to say that he saved my mental health.
A very smart and compassionate therapist
In the time that I had been in CBT with Noah Clyman I have gone from being someone with little direction and control, to being in a place where I feel like I'm steering my life and making choices that are best for me. I am a stubborn and resistant person; yet we were able to work through a handful of issues. He is very knowledgeable, and in time we worked together he offered various resources and tools which were often helpful. I would and have recommended Noah to others.
I began going to Noah almost two years ago and I am sure I would not be as happy as I am today without Noah's help. I have OCD and was extremely unhappy and anxious when I began treatment. I saw no end in sight. I was desperate for help and tried other therapists with frustrating results. Upon meeting Noah, I immediately felt like he was the right person to help me. He is easy to talk to, never judgemental, knowledgable, funny and a great therapist. He has helped me more than I can express and I would highly recommend his services to anyone looking for a caring and effective therapist.
I saw Noah for 2.5 years, and he had a significant, positive impact on my life. When I started working with him, I was dealing with depression and generalized anxiety. I was in the throws of graduate school and had trouble seeing the light at the end of the tunnel. I felt self doubt, and I was overly self critical. Noah helped me get through this and beyond, and I am healthier and happier because of our work together. I had seen other therapists before who I had benefited from, but I got to a point where I wanted to learn practical strategies to use to improve my everyday life and develop more balanced thinking. Choosing Noah as my therapist was the best decision. He truly knows CBT, and he taught me the skills that I now draw from to be my own therapist. I developed more self compassion and balance in my life, my mood has significantly improved, and I have a repertoire of strategies to use to manage anxiety. Beyond his technical skill, I can attest to Noah is character from my personal experience. Noah is a compassionate, grounded, down to earth person, who truly cares for his clients and approaches the work in a collaborative manner, I always felt respected and cared for in our work together, and I feel fortunate to have found him.
I went to Noah for help with a couple issues. I have a psychotherapist I see weekly, but Noah was recommended to me to help with procrastination issues, Noah is very engaging. I always felt he was really right there with me and very encouraging. He was genuinely happy and enthusiastic when I accomplished small steps and larger goals. Noah was delight to work with we accomplished the goals we set out together in about six months. I would whole heartedly recommend Noah to anyone who needs some concrete help moving forward.
Seeing Noah has made an incredible difference in my life and I am now the happiest I've been since coming to see him for my anxiety and depression issues. He is an excellent CBT therapist and taught me many techniques that made an incredible difference in my anxiety level and overall state of being.
Noah assisted me through giving tools and instructions to help change specific patterns that I had a hard time dealing with. I had never had CBT before and his dedication and thorough work has proved to be invaluable. I highly recommend him if anyone is having a difficult time finding ways to change behavior patterns and needs some guidance, and the best thing is that there are no side effects.
Excellent experience. No complaints. Extremely helpful & knowledgable. I highly recomend him. I saw Noah for over 1 year & he really helped me get thorough a lot of obsessive compulsive problems.
