“Oonagh is a rare gift. Working with her has transformed my life. There were things I didn’t understand about myself, so much pain I was burying, and she helped unpack all of it with me. Throughout the process, she’s been empathetic, kind, and caring — but also very direct, honest, and consistent. She has the innate ability to connect the dots on complex situations, and offers a perspective that provides clarity and solutions. Oonagh moves seamlessly between subjects on relationships, work, and health — constantly taking new information into consideration, and recalling it over time. Her sharp wit and sense of humor bring lots of good laughs into our sessions together, and I appreciate her outlook on life. She’s brilliant and inspiring to be around. Her “tough love” approach is actually what I like best — simply revealing the truth and examining it together, patiently and respectfully. I’m so glad I found her and would highly recommend Oonagh to anyone seeking help. Thank you, Oonagh!”

Getting to know Oonagh Hayes

I believe that our beliefs, thoughts and behaviours in adulthood are predominantly as a result of how we experienced our childhood. Some of this will be down to our family life and some is down to the various identities and wider environment that we are born into. We are all unique individuals and, as such, I use a variety of modalities and strategies to best meet each client’s needs. Above all, I strive to provide an environment in which clients feel heard, understood and accepted at all times. I also gently challenge clients, when appropriate, to help them make changes towards a happier and more fulfilling life. I’ve always had a passion for working with people. Starting out as a journalist, working primarily in the corporate and then the education sector, I later gained a BSc in Professional Social Work, which led to an incredibly rewarding 10-year career in child welfare and fostering in London, UK. I moved to New York almost ten years ago to pursue a career in counseling and hold an MA and EdM in Psychological Counseling from Columbia University. I also hold the Advanced Certificate in Rational Emotive Behavioral Therapy (REBT) from The Albert Ellis Institute, the Basic Intensive in Reality Therapy and a certificate in Prolonged Exposure Therapy. I have experience in working with clients who are dealing with: depression; anxiety; shame; grief; addictions; relationship issues; PTSD; coping with significant illness; attachment and identity difficulties; and those trying to navigate life through peri and post menopause.

What should a new client know about working with you?

Due to the modalities I work with and my own personal style, I am active in sessions. The level of how active of course changes depending on the topics you are bringing up and how you are feeling on the day but, more often than not, sessions will feel more like a conversation. I will be checking in with things you share with me and challenging thoughts where appropriate. I also use psychoeducation as part of my practice.

Oonagh just gets it. Our sessions over the past year+ have been immensely helpful to me. She is intelligent, nonjudgmental, thoughtful, and practical, but always with a healthy and appreciated dose of humor sprinkled in. It's like meeting with your extremely wise, funny best friend who also happens to be a life coach. She listens so attentively and remembers even the smallest of details and helps you connect dots you somehow never realized were connected. So many aha moments in our sessions. Oonagh is very direct and doesn't mince words, and I appreciate that about her. So glad I found her!
I have been seeing Oonagh Hayes for about a year now and I truly trust and enjoy working with her. She is direct, understanding, and helps me think through situations at work and personally. She is great in helping challenge me when I need it which is exactly what I needed.
When I first started working with Oonagh, I was looking for a therapist with knowledge of emotive behavioral therapy to help me work through negative patterns and beliefs that I felt may be impacting certain responses that were negatively impacting my relationship with my partner. I have had the privilege of working with her for years now, and from the first time we met she was so easy to connect with. We were able to dive right into the emotional responses I wanted to improve on and then continued to go so much further into other relevant thoughts and responses over time. She has helped me tremendously in understanding, owning and overcoming emotional restrictions and reactions, and in improving how I perform and manage challenges in my career, family and personal relationships and everyday life. With every session we have, she helps make me a more understanding and confident version of myself that is making better choices with tremendously improved emotionally responses that I feel good about. She always shows a genuine concern and is excellent at helping express things as feelings and explore down to what is behind them. She shows compassion and understanding and helps frame perspectives through normal everyday experiences, including my personal ones. Her memory of everything we’ve discussed and details of things I’ve shared all along the way is remarkable. It truly shows how well she listens and how vested she is in her clients and their experiences. Each session ends with some personal homework to focus on and the next session starts with follow up. I truly find this so helpful to promote growth and healing. I’m very grateful to have found such a bright and caring therapist and would highly recommend Oonagh to anyone seeking personal enlightenment and improvement.
Ms. Hayes has turned my life around. I've been seeing her for 4 years and she has helped me with everything that was "stuck" in my life from childhood issues to modern-day challenges. Thank you Oonagh.
I've been seeing Oonagh for 3+ (!!?!?!?) years now and she is an excellent therapist. She has helped me work through a lot of heavy, heavy issues with the seriousness they deserve — while also being able to laugh, and have fun - as much as therapy can be fun! She has helped me change my life immeasurably, I would recommend her to anyone who needs therapy and is looking for someone who will help them gain the skills to help themselves.
Oonagh changed my life for the better. She is experienced, intuitive and will undoubtedly be able to help you navigate anything that may come up in life. She helped me overcome postpartum depression and anxiety, work through past traumas and improved my interpersonal relationships. I am a better mom, wife and friend because of Oonagh and the work we’ve done together. She provides a safe environment to work on the hard stuff in life. I cannot recommend her enough.
Oonagh is incredible in her approach to therapy. She's down to earth and non-judgmental, and provides a very tender touch towards her care. She's incredibly witty and clever, and I always appreciated her sense of humor, honesty, and fearlessness to push me when I needed to be pushed, and to nurtured me when I needed nurturing. She made me feel very at ease when opening up to her, and always left me feeling empowered. Oonagh was exactly what I was hoping to find when I was looking for a therapist, and I could not recommend her enough!
Oonagh is an amazing therapist. Knowledgeable and consistent in her approach while making the conversation feel at ease. She empowers me to make my own decisions to improve my mental health without judgement and I couldn’t appreciate her more.
I have been seeing Oonagh for almost 1 year now and I can say with full confidence that she has made a huge impact on my life. After losing my father unexpectedly, I did not even really know where to begin with my grief and accepting that my life changed forever. It wasn't until I started working with Oonagh that I was able to recognize avoidant behavior and actively work on processing and sitting with my emotions. She has helped me work through several obstacles in my life and I feel much more balanced and at peace mentally. On top of all of the help and guidance, Oonagh is always a very witty and enjoyable person to talk to, which made the entire experience from the beginning that much easier with opening up to her and therapy, as this is my first experience. I highly recommend Oonagh and feel very fortunate that my first experience with a therapist has gone so, so well.
Working with Oonagh has been one of the best investments in my mental health I've made. She has an excellent ability to nurture but also give me the advice that I need to hear to make better emotional choices in my day to day life. She holds me accountable, but does it with tenderness that's needed. Working on inner child work, confidence, my anxiety, and depression has been a long journey, but I can't imagine doing it with anyone other than Oonagh.
Oonagh just gets it. She uses her diverse background to connect with her clients and always find relevant ways to show them a different perspective. She's respectful and understanding ALWAYS, and accommodates my needs as a client from what I need to discuss, the pace I need to go at to change, and even when I need to find a better time for my appointment. I have been with Oonagh for 2 years now and I see the visible changes in myself and the way I act since working with her. Can't recommend her enough.
Seeing Oonagh has been a game changer. She does an amazing job balancing patient listening with actionable questions, and I appreciate her ability to get straight to the point. Truly don't know how I'd have made it through the past 6+ months without her. 10/10 would recommend!
Oonagh is a truly wonderful therapist. Her approach is practical and effective: she focuses on specific issues each session and helps you find the right tools to tackle them. Every week, she gives me "homework" which are topics discussed on our session for me to think about on my own. She has also recommended me several amazing books and other tips to help manage my anxiety and depression. Oonagh is also very funny, warm and honest. She holds you accountable of things but without making you feel pressured or intimidated. I've had great progress over the past year and a half that I've been seeing Oonagh. I was struggling with really bad depression and panic attacks and today I feel like a different person. I highly recommend her. Thanks Oonagh! :)
