Paula Halewski, LCSW

Psychotherapist
VA
With over 35 years of clinical experience across settings including psychiatric emergency care, inpatient treatment, community mental health, private practice, and executive coaching, I'm a Licensed Clinical Social Worker and a Certified Executive Coach. I bring a depth of perspective to my work with individuals who are successful on the outside but often navigating complexity beneath the surface. Many of the clients I work with are high-performing professionals — leaders, entrepreneurs, and individuals who are used to managing responsibility, solving problems, and showing up for others. Yet even with that capability, they may find themselves feeling stuck, disconnected, or dissatisfied in their relationships, their work, have mood or anxiety concerns, or their overall direction. My approach to psychotherapy goes beyond insight alone. While understanding patterns is important, real change happens when we are able to access and work through the emotional experiences that drive those patterns. This process creates greater clarity, stronger decision-making, and a more grounded, authentic way of relating—both personally and professionally. Our work together is collaborative, thoughtful, and focused on meaningful outcomes. Whether you are navigating relationship challenges, career transitions, leadership pressure, mood or anxiety concerns, or a sense that something isn’t quite aligned, therapy offers a space to step back, reflect, and move forward with greater intention. If you’re ready to better understand yourself and create change that is both practical and lasting, I invite you to reach out for an initial conversation.

What should a new client know about working with you?

I'm licensed in Virginia. I can see clients anywhere in the state. I partner with Headway for insurance and self-pay administration. Since I work virtually, I use Headway's platform as it is 100% HIPAA compliant protecting your information. They also check your insurance for you and get you set up with me so your therapy can begin asap. We'll have a 15-minute phone conversation to see if we're a good match. If we decide to schedule a full appointment, your first session is an opportunity for us to get to know each other and begin understanding what brings you in. We’ll start with a conversation about what’s currently on your mind—whether that’s a relationship challenge, career concern, or a general sense that something isn’t working the way you’d like. I’ll ask thoughtful questions to better understand your experiences, patterns, and goals, but there’s no pressure to have everything figured out. You can share at your own pace. This is a space for open, honest conversation without judgment. We’ll also talk about what you’re hoping to get out of our work together and begin identifying areas of focus. If it feels helpful, I may offer initial reflections or insights, but the first session is less about “fixing” things and more about building clarity and direction. Just as importantly, this is your chance to get a feel for me—how I work, how the conversation flows, and whether it feels like a good fit. A strong therapeutic relationship is essential, and you should feel comfortable and supported. By the end of the session, you can expect to have: A clearer understanding of your concerns and goals A sense of how I approach therapy An idea of what working together might look like moving forward If we decide to continue, we’ll begin to develop a plan that supports meaningful, lasting change.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

Your first session is a chance for us to get to know each other and explore what brings you in — whether it's relationships, career concerns, or feeling stuck. By the end, you'll have greater clarity on your goals, a sense of my approach, and an idea of what working together could look like. If we decide to continue, we'll begin to develop a plan that supports meaningful, lasting change.
