Getting to know Peter Williamson

My practice is located in Chelsea near 23rd Street. I offer psychoanalytically oriented psychotherapy integrated with cognitive behavioral and mindfulness approaches. I’m interested in getting to know each person I work with so that I can develop an individualized understanding of the concerns that bring them to therapy while also keeping in mind the goals they have for themselves in terms of the life they want. I’m responsive and value engagement in the conversations that happen, and I can also listen respectfully and comfortably. I privilege empathy and understanding as the base from which all growth-promoting work proceeds. My practice is culturally diverse, with many clients, though not all, from the LGBTQ community. I hold a Master’s in Social Work from New York University.

What should a new client know about working with you?

In the first session I'll usually let the person fill me in on what's bringing them to therapy and what they hope we might accomplish; by the end of that session I will share my initial responses to share about what will be helpful and what I'm sensing about potential ways to move forward and see if that seems to fit. In subsequent sessions, if it's feeling right, I'll usually take a more detailed history of relationships and life events. As therapy proceeds, I find a way to check in about how our work is being experienced and how much it's helping, and if there need to be shifts with approaches.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

I spend a good bit of time listening, understanding and checking back in to make sure I have it right. When I comment or have something lengthier to say, I offer it as potentially helpful and also wait to see if it's been received that way. I tend to let people go where they need and want to in a session; if I think there's something that really needs to be talked about openly and directly (especially with regard to safety or harm concerns), I do my best to make that happen in a way that's respectful and won't damage the relationship. I value appropriate spontaneity, candor, and humor both as a professional and as a person.
