Philip Bower, LICSW

Psychotherapist
MA
I work with LGBTQIA+ adults and others living outside the usual scripts who are tired of being edited down for other people’s comfort. Many of my clients come to therapy feeling anxious, depressed, overwhelmed, disconnected, or unsure who they are after years of trying to be acceptable to others. My approach is warm, direct, trauma-responsive, and grounded in respect for the full complexity of your story. I often support clients navigating identity, shame, grief, relationship stress, burnout, self-trust, kink, polyamory, and the old roles they were taught to play in order to stay safe or loved. Therapy with me is not about forcing you into a polished version of yourself. It is a place to slow down, name what you have been carrying, and begin making choices that feel more honest, steady, and your own.

Getting to know Philip Bower

What should a new client know about working with you?

You do not need to arrive with everything figured out. Many clients begin therapy feeling uncertain, guarded, overwhelmed, or unsure how much of the real story they are allowed to bring. I try to create a space where we can move at a thoughtful pace, be honest without being harsh, and stay curious about what has helped you survive as well as what may no longer be serving you. I am engaged and collaborative in sessions. I will listen carefully, ask direct questions when they are useful, and help you notice patterns without shaming you for having them. Our work may include practical coping tools, reflection, emotional regulation, self-compassion, and looking at the stories, relationships, and expectations that shaped how you learned to move through the world.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

Early on, I focus on understanding what brings you to therapy, what you want to be different, and what has already helped you get this far. We will talk about your history, current stressors, relationships, strengths, coping patterns, and what feels most important to address first. From there, we usually begin identifying the patterns that keep showing up — the ones that protect you, exhaust you, or keep you feeling stuck. Some sessions may be more reflective and exploratory; others may be more practical, with tools for managing anxiety, mood, boundaries, communication, or emotional overwhelm. I do not believe therapy has to follow one rigid script. We will check in regularly on what is working, what needs to shift, and whether our work still fits your needs. The goal is not perfection. The goal is more clarity, more choice, and a steadier relationship with yourself.
