Getting to know Philip Ernest

I believe that you were created for relationship, but your relationships are going to be the source of both your greatest joys in life as well as your greatest pain. This relational pain functions as the "check engine light" in our life, calling us to stop and figure out what is causing it to light up. From your family of origin through all of your current relationships, this is true. I view the counseling process as an alliance whereby we can explore these relationships from a variety of different perspectives and use the pains and sorrows of life as a doorway into a healthier future. I was born overseas to missionary parents and having lived in a number of different cultures I am able to bring this understanding of the role culture can play in our lives. Married to my wife for over 40 years, parent to 5 children, 3 biological and 2 adopted, and now grandparent to a growing number, I am able to understand the different stages of our lives. I was a teacher for over 30 years, middle and high school and have been a counselor for over 25 years, each of these experiences helping me grow in my understanding of people. I employ an eclectic approach to therapy, being trained in a CBT based model but I borrow freely from other streams if they are good and helpful to the client. I have been trained in Critical Incident Stress Managment, Mediation, EMDR and some other PTSD therapies. My bachelor's degree was in Theology and History from Multnomah University and my master's in counseling is from Western Seminary, Seattle. Selecting a therapist and beginning therapy can be a daunting task. As your ally, my role is to come along side you and support you as you make the changes you would like in your life. Some of the most powerful words in the English language are, "you are not alone."
