Rashmi Umarji, LMSW

Psychotherapist
333 E 34th St, Ste 1K, New York, NY
I am a psychotherapist with a background as a yoga teacher, licensed esthetician, and artist, and I view social work as a natural extension of my long-standing commitment to mental health advocacy, self-care, and embodied well-being. My work is rooted in the belief that joy, contentment, and ease are not luxuries, but states of being that historically and presently disenfranchised communities deserve consistent access to. As a first-generation South Asian American, I am especially committed to working with other South Asians and expanding access to culturally attuned mental health care. My approach is informed by psychodynamic and cognitive-behavioral frameworks, while drawing eclectically from feminist theory, queer scholarship, indigenous wisdom, humanism, and somatic-based practices. I bring creativity, sensitivity, body-based awareness, neurodivergence, and a queer, multicultural lens into the therapeutic space to support meaningful, sustainable healing.

What should a new client know about working with you?

Working with me means entering a therapeutic relationship that centers safety, curiosity, and your innate capacity for growth. I bring my full presence into sessions—my creativity, attentiveness, and respect for the sacredness of witnessing your inner world. Therapy is not about fixing or pathologizing you; it’s about creating the conditions for your gifts to emerge and your authentic self to take up more space in your life. I am especially attuned to the experiences of women and femme-identified individuals, LGBTQIA+ and BIPOC communities, first-generation individuals, and those navigating chronic illness, burnout, identity exploration, and life transitions. I believe that the strength of our work together lies in the trust we build, the rapport we cultivate, and our shared commitment to your healing and expansion.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

Our work typically begins with developing a strong therapeutic foundation—getting to know your history, relationships, values, and what feels most present for you now. Early sessions focus on building trust, clarifying goals, and understanding patterns that may be contributing to distress or disconnection. As therapy continues, I take an eclectic and collaborative approach, often integrating parts work and Internal Family Systems (IFS), somatic awareness, mindfulness, and psychodynamic exploration. When appropriate or desired, I invite creative expression into the process, including narrative work, art-based techniques, meditation, and movement. A core value guiding my work is a decolonial perspective, which means remaining deeply committed to ongoing (un)learning, self-reflection, and accountability around identity, power, and privilege. Therapy is paced with care and flexibility, regularly checking in to ensure that our work continues to feel supportive, meaningful, and aligned with your evolving needs.
