“Catherine was the first therapist I ever had and I couldn't have asked a better one. From the start, she created an environment that felt really open and welcoming, which made me feel very comfortable opening up to her about the issues I'd been having with my girlfriend at the time. I left every session feeling like I'd gained some really valuable insight into both my emotions and romantic relationships in general - whether it was just some advice she gave me or a new perspective she helped me find. When I first started going to her to help me through my breakup, I had no idea how much I'd grow and develop in just six months of weekly sessions, and it's all because of her guidance and care. Unfortunately I switched insurances after getting a new job and she ended up being out-of-network, or else I'd 100% still be going to her. Super grateful for her lessons and wisdom that I know I'll carry with me for the rest of my life. She's a wonderful therapist!!! ”

“My experience with Catherine was fantastic from the beginning. She worked through some big life moments with me and provided the support and guidance I really needed to get through those times. She was challenging where necessary and supportive at all times. She provides a valuable perspective and guidance on how to move forward in an insightful and fulfilling manner. I utilize many tools that Catherine has taught me in my everyday life. She has helped me work through and overcome fears I never thought I would get away from. Our journey together lasted a year and a half and only stopped because I moved out of state. I can only hope my next provider will be of similar experience with Catherine. I highly recommend her to anyone looking for a provider they can trust and build a professional relationship with. ”

Getting to know Rebecca Catherine Coats

Catherine is a Senior Staff Therapist at Sentient Psychotherapy, a boutique brick and mortar practice group in Lower Manhattan. About Catherine: I work with high-achieving professionals and college students who are struggling with anxiety, grief, identity questions, or relationship challenges—often while appearing “fine” on the outside. Many of the behaviors that once helped you cope or succeed may now be fueling burnout, disconnection, or emotional shutdown. Together, we’ll look closely at the patterns you fall into under stress—avoidance, overthinking, self-criticism, or withdrawal—and begin practicing new, more effective ways of responding in real time. I completed my master's in Counseling for Mental Health and Wellness at New York University.

What should a new client know about working with you?

My work is practical, active, and grounded in helping you function better day to day. We’ll focus on changing behaviors that keep anxiety and depression in place, processing grief that hasn’t yet been fully felt, and strengthening your ability to stay present in relationships without losing yourself. As you build psychological flexibility, you’ll gain more choice in how you respond—to stress, to loss, and to the people in your life—so you can move forward with greater clarity, stability, and confidence.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

Using a blend of mindfulness-based, multiculturally-focused therapy, Internal Family Systems (IFS/Parts work), and Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), we’ll equip you with practical tools to achieve the changes you desire. This values-driven approach empowers you to live with greater intention and purpose, building a life you love – on your own terms.
