11 Hanover Square, New York, NY
Reine Hewitt, LCSW, is a relational psychotherapist working with individuals, couples, and adult families in New York. Her practice is grounded in the belief that meaningful change begins with curiosity, compassion, and a willingness to turn toward what is difficult. Reine works with people navigating anxiety, ADHD, grief, trauma, life transitions, relationship challenges, and questions of identity and meaning. In her work with couples and adult families, she helps clients understand patterns of communication and conflict, rebuild trust, strengthen connection, and develop more compassionate and effective ways of relating to one another. Her approach is relational, trauma-informed, and collaborative. She draws from psychodynamic therapy, Compassion-Focused Therapy, Relational Life Therapy (RLT), Nonviolent Communication (NVC), mindfulness, and other evidence-based approaches, adapting the work to the needs of each person or relationship. Reine has been a licensed clinical social worker since 2011. Before becoming a therapist, she spent many years working with books and art, including training as a classical bookbinder and creating artist books exploring communication and identity. That background continues to inform her interest in the stories people carry, the ways we make meaning, and the possibility of creating something new from what we have inherited. She is an out-of-network provider that can provide superbills for reimsbursement.

What should a new client know about working with you?

Therapy with me is collaborative, engaged, and grounded in curiosity rather than judgment. You do not need to arrive knowing exactly what is wrong or what needs to change. We can begin with what is happening now and work together to understand the patterns, experiences, relationships, and histories that have brought you here. I believe compassion and accountability can coexist. Our work may involve slowing down enough to notice familiar reactions, making room for difficult emotions, questioning old stories, practicing new ways of communicating, or experimenting with different responses outside of therapy. I tend to be active and engaged rather than simply listening from a distance, while leaving room for reflection and for the unexpected directions therapy sometimes takes. A phrase I often return to is Thich Nhat Hanh’s “no mud, no lotus.” Therapy does not require getting rid of every difficult feeling or experience. Sometimes the work is learning how to meet what is already here differently, and discovering what can grow from it.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

Our first sessions are an opportunity to get to know one another and begin understanding what brings you to therapy, what feels difficult now, and what you hope might become different. We will talk about your current concerns as well as relevant relationships, experiences, and patterns that may help us understand the larger picture. From there, therapy becomes more individualized. Some sessions may be reflective and exploratory, while others may be more active and skills-focused. We might examine a recurring relationship pattern, slow down an emotional reaction, practice communication skills, explore how earlier experiences are showing up in the present, or identify concrete experiments to try between sessions. With couples and adult families, I pay particular attention to the patterns that develop between people rather than locating the problem in any one person. We work to understand what happens during moments of disconnection or conflict and practice ways of communicating, listening, setting boundaries, repairing, and reconnecting. Therapy is not a fixed formula. I regularly check in about what is useful, what is changing, and where we may need to adjust our focus. The goal is to create a process that is both thoughtful and practical, with enough structure to support change and enough flexibility to respond to what emerges. I invite you to book a free consultation, if with your partner - please pick a time you can both attend.
