Getting to know Rene Gonzalez

I'm a trauma therapist in NYC specializing in childhood emotional neglect (CEN), abandonment, and abuse. I help people who struggle with attachment issues in the here and now because of past experiences. Many of my clients also face shame and guilt, anxiety, panic attacks, depression, and Complex PTSD (C-PTSD). Being Mexican-American from the Texas-Mexico border gives me firsthand expertise in supporting Latinx clients, and I also work with people who identify as LGBTQIA+. As a gay man, I appreciate how sexuality intersects with trauma and other issues specific to Latinx and BIPOC communities. I've completed training that enables me to be sensitive to the needs of the communities I serve. I hold a Master's in Mental Health Counseling and a Bachelor's degree from Southern Methodist University. I use a compassionate and gentle approach with clients but recognize when it's necessary to be direct. My approach is never one-size-fits-all; I draw from different modalities based on what arises in session. The modalities I use most include Trauma-Informed Stabilization Treatment (TIST), or parts work, Internal Family Systems (IFS), Somatic Therapy, and Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), among others. Because I understand that relationships can feel unsafe after trauma, I respect the defenses that may arise during deeper work and take great care to move at your pace.

Rene s very friendly and approachable. He is easy to talk to, and he is very thoughtful in his responses, suggestions, and guidance. I cannot recommend him enough.
From the very first session, Rene's professionalism, empathy, and expertise were evident. He builds a welcoming and non-judgmental space where I felt truly heard and understood. Our sessions were not only informative but also empowering.
I have been to numerous therapists throughout my life but it was Rene that was the one who truly changed it. He was patient, kind, and warm from the moment we met and was able to break through things other therapists could not. Working with Rene has had such an positive impact on me that my work with him inspired me to return to school to pursue a masters degree in counseling! He has been absolutely amazing to work with and I would recommend him to anyone looking for counseling.
I'm new to therapy, and Rene gave me a clear idea of what to expect at the beginning of our session. So far so good, I plan on coming back. He was pretty knowledgeable about anxiety in general, so I def feel like I came to the right place.

I'm a therapist, and I know what good therapy is. Rene is a great therapist. I was impressed by his ability to balance relationship building, and getting the information he needed to assess me properly. We also did a consultation prior to the appointment, as I had cold feet about working with a male therapist, and our talk really assuaged my concerns. I also know he's getting training at the Institute for Contemporary Psychotherapy, which is an excellent training institute. Clinicians there get supervision from some of the best in the field. I feel like I'm in good hands.

Very warm and kind yet professional and clearly knowledgeable. I don’t tend to open up easily but he created a safe environment off the bat. Would absolutely recommend.

Overall it was a good experience. 5 stars.
Rene is a great therapist. He is easy to talk to, listens attentively, and offers feedback and suggestions that I feel I can actually accomplish.
My experience has been good. He's easy to talk to, I actually felt like he cared. I came in because I've been dealing with some heavy stuff, and he noticed right away that I really needed to talk, and was really present during our first session, so we got to the intake during our second session. I think he could tell I was struggling and helped me out by teaching me some coping skills right off the bat.
I've done a couple of sessions with Rene now, and it's been a positive experience. I was with my last therapist for years, but recently moved to NY and had to find someone new, something I had put off for a couple of months. I'm so glad I finally made the move, and that I landed with Rene. Ive seen a couple of therapists before, Rene is hands down the best therapist I've ever had. He's really knowledgeable, and I like that he shares his expertise, and has really provided some guidance. I don't really write reviews, but I'm just so grateful that things have worked out, it's hard finding a therapist you click with. Would highly recommend.
I've only had my first appointment with Rene, but I am so glad I reached out to him. Even from the initial emails exchanged with him I felt very comfortable. Each interaction has been approached with intention and care. I've never had a male therapist before, so I had some initial anxiety about that, but after our first appointment I no longer have that anxiety. His initial assessment was incredibly thorough and approached without judgement. He shared his thoughts and feedback openly, while also making some suggestions for moving forward in working together. The experience felt collaborative in a way that was understandable and encouraging. I am very much looking forward to continuing to work with him.
