Getting to know Renee Totten

My education and credentials include a Bachelor's degree from the University of Phoenix in 2013 and a Master's in Counseling from South University, Richmond, earned in 2018. I have worked in inpatient and outpatient settings with children, adolescents, and adults struggling with trauma, anxiety, and depression. I also have experience supporting clients through life transitions and career guidance. Although you will work with me virtually, it will feel as if we are in the same room. I like to help reduce any immediate nervousness when we first meet because I am here to help and not to judge. My approach is not one size fits all. Instead, I follow the lead of my clients, so each session may differ depending on your needs.

What should a new client know about working with you?

Utilizing solution-focused therapy and person-centered principles, we will work to find solutions that you can use to empower yourself through healing and personal growth. Focusing on the here and now allows us to address your current situation. Then, you will learn how to tackle obstacles in your life now and in the future. Getting the correct tools lets you control your life and make lasting changes. The journey of change can be rough but is different for each person. We will be a guide to help you through rough patches by creating a sage and welcoming environment. Together, we will create reparative and healing experiences that help you connect to the life that you want to live.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

The clients that gain the most from working with me are the ones who are ready to take the lead and be in charge of their lives. They are motivated for something different and desire actual change that will last. These clients are willing to trust the process and hold on through uncomfortable moments to get to the life they desire.

Renee is a caring professional. I’ve been working with her for the past year and feel like I’ve made great progress in my mental health journey. Renee has given me numerous tools to use to manage my symptoms, allowing me to work, set boundaries, and travel with my family. I am much closer to living the life I desire to lead with Renee’s help.
My visits with Mrs. Renee are always just what I need! She is equal parts compassionate, supportive, insightful, and encouraging using helpful tools and strategies that are practical for real-world application and sustainment. Her faith-based approach makes her even more of a much-needed rarity and I honestly can’t remember how I previously survived through life without her.
