Getting to know Robert Caplan

Hi! I’m Robert, and I’m a social worker and therapist. I earned my masters in social work at Columbia University, where I completed internships in the fields of substance use and serious mental illness. Since then, I have been working in the city shelter system and as a psychotherapist at a community mental health clinic. I am currently undergoing post-graduate psychoanalytic training at the Institute for the Psychoanalytic Study of Subjectivity.

What should a new client know about working with you?

My approach to therapy is to develop a safe, nonjudgmental and trusting atmosphere where you can freely express your thoughts and feelings. Together, we will collaboratively explore how your lived experience informs and maintains expectations and attitudes - about yourself, others, and the world - and how these may be supporting or thwarting your current efforts to meet your needs in relationships, reach your professional goals, and realize your innermost desires. Through the ongoing development of our therapeutic relationship, we will arrive at an in-depth understanding of your emotional world that enhances your sense of personal agency, vitality, and freedom so that you can live a more easeful, creative, and satisfying life.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

Each therapy session will be guided by your most pressing motivations and needs. I will engage you in close and careful explorations of how your emotional processes are impacting your current experience to help increase your self-reflective awareness and support you in integrating your emotional experience into a more cohesive, stable and holistic sense of self.

Robert is a great therapist and he's really helping me getting things in perspective and helping me be a better person.
Professional, great communication and helped me very much. Highly recommend.
Robert is an excellent listener. He's personable, affable, and helpful in giving advice and advising treatment. He helped me a great deal over the course of our sessions. I highly recommend him.
I can’t recommend Robert enough, 10/10. I’ve had several therapist throughout my life but my work with Robert has probably been the most consequential. Throughout this entire process Robert has challenged me while making me feel safe. With his help, I’ve been able to tackle some deep rooted issues I’ve struggled with most of my life, including some things previous therapists weren’t able to help me with. Robert’s approach is caring and honest. He’s a good listener and is good at reading and understanding situations you might be going through, while helping you discover how to navigate them.
Robert is an excellent therapist and I really benefitted from our time together. He is very attentive and thoughtful and helped me make meaningful connections within my experiences.
Mr. Caplan was my therapist for a long time. I was very sad to see him go. During our sessions he was fair, balanced, and attentive while helping me work through my problems. He was also personable and affable in a way that eased my anxiety about sharing my problems with a stranger. I cannot recommend him highly enough.
Smart and professional. Very comfortable to talk to and has very good insight. Helped me out with several issues. Highly recommend
Smart and professional, very comfortable talking with Mr. Kaplan and helped me out with several issues. Definitely recommend this guy!
Robert was my first therapist, and I couldn't have asked for a better experience. He was patient with me as I struggled to get used to having sessions on my busy schedule and was a strong, active listener. I could tell he was soaking in the details of whatever I was telling him and he would surprise me constantly with the connections he was able to make. Just having weekly sessions with him really opened up a lot of active interpersonal communication that led to healthier thought processes and a greater ability to handle my anxiety. He was able to handle conversations and topics that were outside of his realm of experience in terms of race, queerness and more. I'm really grateful for my time with Robert and for the foundation we have laid down for future sessions. I would highly recommend him, especially if it's your first time doing therapy!
Robert is incredible. When I started with him I didn't know exactly what I wanted, but what I got was someone who was kind, patient, encouraging, and who was just as comfortable navigating my lows and they were my highs. I can't recommend Robert enough, thank you!!
Dr. Robert was great. Really helped me in every way I need it and put me in a better and healthier path mentally. Very profesional and overall a great doctor. Fully recommend him.

I started seeing Mr. Kaplan remotely shortly after the pandemic began and I was leaving a difficult relationship. I was very low when we first spoke and slowly but surely Mr. Kaplan helped me regain my confidence and clarity which guided me into the next phase in my life. I am eternally grateful for the work we did together. Mr. Kaplan is kind, patient, and gentle. He asks good questions and is very intuitive in sessions. I would highly recommend him for talk therapy.
I did talk therapy over the phone with Robert for several years, starting at the beginning 2020. My experience was excellent. I have had several therapists before, and Robert was my favorite. He is compassionate, focused, easy to talk to, and he took my issues and concerns seriously. I was struggling with addiction and depression, and Robert was a big part of my journey towards accepting and overcoming these parts of my life. I highly recommend him to anyone looking for a therapist.
I have been Theraphy for some time and have had a few therapist, Robert by far has been the best connection I’ve had with a therapist and the growth I’ve maintain because of it has been great. I’m in a much better mental health space because of Robert. I recommend Robert to anyone out there. It will be one of the best decisions you will do towards your mental health, I know I have.
