Getting to know Robert McVey

He/Him Robert McVey is Clinical Coordinator and a Senior Staff Therapist at IHI, with a Certificate in Field Instruction. In 2014 he was awarded a fellowship in psychoanalysis from the NYU School of Medicine. He joined IHI as a Staff Therapist in June, 2003. Robert maintains a private practice in Manhattan. He was educated at Sarah Lawrence College, Harvard University, and New York University. Robert is also an author, and his book of short stories was nominated for a Lambda Award. His new novel is ready for publication.

I highly enjoyed my experience with Robert. His practice is low-key and welcoming and Robert put me at ease. I felt safe and listened to and Robert's feedback and interventions were always relevant and helpful. His comments made me think about my situation in a new way and I consistently leave feeling better about myself than when I arrived. He has really helped me.

I have very much enjoyed working with Robert, especially since I was in need of a new therapist. He is attentive, kind, authentic, and creates a safe space where I know I'll be able to think thru and talk about what is on my mind. I feel like Robert is very present in the room and feel like the work is a collaboration between the two of us. I know things take the time that they take, and I am comfortable in that process with Robert.
