Getting to know Ruqaiyah Rogers
Hello! I am Ruqaiyah Rogers, a licensed clinical social worker with a Master's in Social Work and Public Administration from Grand Valley State University. I am honored to be part of your mental health and wellness journey towards healing and recovery. As a trauma-informed therapist, I believe people are worthy of so much more self-compassion and self-acceptance than they give themselves, and with the right skills and tools in place, can cultivate the type of life they want and deserve to live.
What should a new client know about working with you?
I'm a relational type therapist meaning I focus on connection and building an atmosphere that makes you feel welcomed, safe, heard, valued, seen and understood. During your first visit, part of the purpose and focus of therapy is getting to know you, and I'll do that by asking questions about your life, background and what brought you to therapy. It is also important to recognize, the goal of the first session is for you to see if you feel comfortable with me. I'll encourage you to ask me questions to see if I am a "good fit" for you as a therapist. Sometimes you can tell this in the first session and if this is the case, it is okay to tell me I'm not quite what you are looking for in a therapist. Then there are times after the first session, you're not sure, so it may take a couple of sessions for you to make this decision about continuing with me as your therapist and/or even therapy itself. Either way, I am here to support you on your mental health journey.
What is your typical process for working with clients?
Even though during the first session, I ask about your general goals for therapy, the second session focuses on more details about your goals for therapy and creating a treatment plan. What do you want to have - better, changed or different about your life as a result of being in therapy? Once the treatment plan is created, in a typical session one of my primary ways of working with clients is through a therapy called Brainspotting. Brainspotting focuses on identifying, processing and healing core sources of emotional body pain, trauma, dissociation and a variety of other challenging symptoms. It provides a path for deep healing with the brain and body. But before I utilize any specific form of therapy, I talk more about how it works with examples. It is my hope that you'll gain a lot from therapy such as improvement in your interpersonal relationships and have a better understanding of your emotions. Just know that a successful therapy experience also depends on your readiness and commitment to change: Therapy starts when you are ready for it.
