Getting to know Samuel Coyl

**we do not do medication management** I focus on treating anxiety, depression, self-esteem and trauma. Life should be more than just learning how to tolerate symptoms. I believe that using empathy, open-minded discussions, and therapeutic strategies is the key to healing. As a father, Marine Corps veteran, and business owner, I have a unique perspective when dealing with trauma and related mental health issues. I specialize in working with trauma survivors, veterans and first responders to help with building better communication techniques, coping skills, and healing from trauma. Being a Marine Corps veteran and a trauma-informed therapist, I understand the importance of self care, boundaries, and managing emotions. I focus on understanding how to recognize triggers and blind spots and learning how to train better reactions. These skills and methods can be used to help build better skills when dealing with trauma and mental health. Our lives are constantly filled with stress, pressure, anxiety, depression, and, in some cases, trauma. These can cause negative impacts on our personal/work lives, relationships, and family. It is my commitment to give you a safe place where you will be heard and given freedom and room to explore these parts of your life. I want to hear your story.

What should a new client know about working with you?

I approach therapy with calm, empathy, and direct honesty. My work starts with understanding each person’s history because most present stress, anxiety, and relationship strain grows from earlier experiences that were never fully addressed. My role is to help patients stabilize symptoms so they can safely explore the deeper patterns that continue to shape their lives. Therapy moves forward when we understand the origin of those patterns and begin to heal them. I served as a United States Marine and later earned graduate training in social work and trauma treatment. My background allows me to understand the impact of high stress, responsibility, and chronic pressure on the mind and body. I bring that perspective to every session and create a space where patients feel understood without judgment. I use a steady, structured approach that focuses on clarity, practical tools, and emotional regulation. Patients learn to manage immediate symptoms while we identify and work through the root causes of distress. I believe people do not need to stay stuck in old roles or reactions that no longer serve them. Patients learn how to notice their internal responses, challenge unhelpful beliefs, and build more effective ways of navigating relationships, careers, and personal transitions. My work supports individuals who want to move beyond surface level symptom management and who are ready for meaningful change. I guide the process with transparency and collaboration. Therapy works best when patients feel supported, respected, and actively engaged in their own healing. My goal is to help each person develop a stronger sense of self, steadier emotional footing, and the confidence to move forward with purpose and stability.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

A typical session focuses on building calm, steady progress toward understanding what drives a person’s thoughts, emotions, and reactions. We meet through secure telehealth, which gives patients flexibility and privacy while allowing us to work with the same focus and depth as an in-person session. Each meeting starts with a brief check-in to understand current stressors, shifts in mood, or changes in functioning. This helps set direction and keeps therapy grounded in what is most relevant for the patient that day. The core of our work uses talk therapy supported by evidence-based methods. I use CBT to help patients identify distortions in thinking and patterns that create anxiety, frustration, or avoidance. DBT skills support emotional regulation, distress tolerance, and more balanced communication. IFS guides patients toward understanding their inner protective parts and the wounded parts that carry old burdens. Motivational Interviewing strengthens readiness for change and supports patients who feel stuck or ambivalent. This combination creates a structured yet flexible session. Patients learn practical strategies that ease immediate symptoms while we explore the deeper roots of their struggles. We work at a pace that feels steady and safe. Patients gain insight, practice new skills, and examine how early experiences still shape today’s responses. I give clear guidance, ask direct questions, and keep the session focused so patients walk away with clarity and a plan for the week ahead. The goal of each session is progress that feels meaningful and grounded. Patients finish feeling heard, supported, and more equipped to manage their emotional world. Therapy becomes a consistent place to understand yourself more fully and to build long-term change, not just short-term relief.
