Getting to know Sara Yates

I am a Licensed Mental Health Counselor. I began my journey in the field of mental health and substance abuse as an outpatient secretary at Horizon Health Services. I have since obtained a Master's degree in Mental Health Counseling from Medaille University in Buffalo. I have experience in individual counseling as well as in group settings such as recovery centers, crisis/stabilization and detox, and residential treatment for both mental health and substance abuse. My approach I utilize Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Dialectical Behavioral Therapy, Psychodynamic, as well as Mindfulness interventions. I specialize in anger management. I have a person-centered, trauma-informed approach to counseling. My focus I have worked with clients with varying mental health diagnoses such as Depression, Anxiety, Bipolar Disorder, Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder, Personality Disorders, and Schizophrenia, as well as Substance Use Disorders. My communication style I am a trauma-informed and person-centered therapist. I work to establish a good rapport and a base of trust with clients. I communicate openly and encourage my clients to do the same. I set the tone for a judgment-free environment and provide validation for all concerns the client deems important. My journey to therapy I have personal experience regarding the effects of mental health and substance use on individuals, as well as families and partners. I believe that all people can benefit from therapy to work through pain and trauma, learn how to regulate and process emotions, and establish and maintain boundaries in their lives. I look to provide support and guidance to the best of my ability. My goals for you I feel it is important to meet the client where they are in the present and to work toward specific therapeutic goals. I allow the client to set the tone and provide interventions, insights, and guidance to help work through and complete treatment goals.
