Getting to know Sarah Alvi

Everyone needs therapy. Not all of the time. Not for the rest of your life. But at some point, we all experience uncertainty, hopelessness, sadness, ambiguity, worry, stress, confusion, mental exhaustion, or loss of control. There are so many reasons for therapy, but making sure your mental health is in a good state is the best reason of them all. As a huge advocate of wholistic mental health, I will work with you and/or your partner(s) on current struggles or concerns that are presenting within your realm. We will use a non judgmental space and affirm every part that you come in with to ensure you feel safe and heard.

What should a new client know about working with you?

Clients should consider working with Sarah Alvi, LMFT, for a personalized and effective therapeutic experience grounded in over 12 years of clinical expertise. Sarah offers a collaborative, solution-focused approach, tailoring treatment to each individual's unique needs and goals. She is certified in sex therapy and trained in various modalities, including cognitive behavioral, psychodynamic, person-centered, humanistic, and trauma-focused therapies. Sarah specializes in helping individuals navigate anxiety, depression, life transitions, and the unique challenges of living in NYC. Additionally, she works with couples at any stage, assisting them in improving communication and resolving conflicts. Her practice is inclusive and affirming, welcoming clients from diverse backgrounds, including LGBTQIA+ individuals. Sarah's commitment is to provide a safe, non-judgmental space where clients can dismantle barriers to self-realization and achieve meaningful progress, one week at a time.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

First and foremost, I want to ensure the client feels engaged and open to discuss difficult topics. I do this by creating a non judgmental environment to allow for speaking freely. I am direct and will help the client guide their conversations by using humor and therapeutic knowledge to make them feel comfortable. We will find an approach that works best for that client and use that to move through treatment.

I’ve been seeing Sarah for several years and have only had positive experiences with her. I’m thankful for every session.
Sarah is patient, a great listener, and challenges gently. She’s been a great help in processing.

Sarah has a warm and genuine presence that immediately puts me at ease, but she’s also direct in a way that makes me feel empowered and in control of my own growth. Her thoughtful guidance has helped me navigate challenges with more clarity and confidence, and I always leave our sessions feeling supported and heard.
Sarah is an incredible couples therapist. She leads and guides the conversation with understanding and empathy, so everyone feels heard and acknowledged during her sessions. She has provided my wife and I with good habits and actions that we take to improve and grow our marriage on our own and knows when to wind down/up the session frequency. She is also available in a pinch, and has provided an avenue for us to communicate when we get stuck. We couldn't recommend her more!
I highly recommend Sarah! From my first session, they created a warm, supportive environment that made it easy to open up. Their compassionate approach and insightful guidance helped me navigate my challenges and develop effective coping strategies. Thanks to Sarah, I've gained clarity and confidence in my life. Truly a life-changing experience!
Sarah saved our marriage. A lot of misunderstanding had been built over the years between my spouse and I. Sarah dissected the problem strategically, listening patiently and giving us very practical advise. She also gave specific tasks that we could do to work on our relationship. Highly recommended!
Sarah was a steady, supportive presence while I worked through some complex family issues. She helped me untangle years of tension, set healthy boundaries, and find clarity in really emotional situations. I felt truly heard and understood, and her guidance made a difficult time much more manageable. I’m so grateful for her.

Sarah is always so helpful in our visits and is flexible in scheduling when needed. I feel that I’ve grown during my time with her but have not “outgrown” her as she’s always pushing me to think differently and address the issues the things that are bothering me.
Sarah is an incredible therapist. I came to her during a rough patch in my relationship, and her guidance was exactly what I needed. She truly understands the complexities of LGBTQ relationships and made me feel completely safe and understood—no explanations needed. Her empathy, insight, and support helped me navigate a tough time with clarity and confidence. I’m so grateful for her.
I came to therapy to get support with my anxiety. Sarah was so helpful. She really helped me talk through things I haven’t felt comfortable sharing to prior therapists. Sarah, thank you!
Working with Sarah has been truly transformative for my relationship. She created a safe, supportive space where my partner and I could explore our communication patterns and reconnect on a deeper level. Through thoughtful guidance, practical tools, and compassionate insight, Sarah helped us understand each other in ways we hadn't before. I’m incredibly grateful for the clarity and connection we’ve gained through this process. Highly recommend to anyone looking to strengthen their relationship.
We came to Sarah as a polycule going through a really difficult time—there were trust issues, miscommunications, and a growing sense of disconnect. From the first session, she created a space that felt safe, nonjudgmental, and deeply affirming of our relationship. Sarah helped us feel heard and understood while also guiding us to see the bigger patterns at play. She asked the right questions, offered tools we could use between sessions, and helped us rebuild a foundation of trust—not just between individuals, but within our entire dynamic. What stood out most was her deep knowledge of polyamory, consent, and relational ethics. We never had to explain or defend our identity; instead, we could focus on healing. We’ve come away from therapy with not only deeper insight into ourselves and each other, but with a renewed sense of connection. We’re grateful and would highly recommend her to any polycule or non-monogamous folks looking for compassionate, informed, and effective support.
Things felt a little messy in my relationship because I've been struggling with kink-related boundaries. I was nervous going in to my session, but Sarah made me feel really comfortable and not judged at all, which made everything so much easier to talk about. We worked on figuring out what my boundaries are, how to trust myself more, and how to speak up without feeling guilty or awkward. I'm also learning how my patterns effect how I communicate and show up in other areas of my life. I’m excited to continue my sessions and do the work.
Working with Sarah has been an incredibly healing and empowering experience. From the very first session, she made me feel completely seen, heard, and supported. She creates a space that feels safe, compassionate, and free of judgment—a place where it’s okay to show up exactly as you are. Sarah has a way of gently guiding conversations while helping you uncover your own strength and insight. She’s thoughtful, empathetic, and deeply skilled at what she does. Whether I’ve needed help working through anxiety, navigating relationships, or making sense of big emotions, she has met me with unwavering presence and care. I’ve grown so much during my time with her, and I truly can’t recommend her enough. If you’re looking for someone who will support you with both heart and expertise, Sarah is the therapist to see.
Sarah is an incredible therapist. She is extremely attentive and patient, and truly helped me through a very hard period in my life. I worked with her in a family therapy setting with my brother, and she completely transformed the way we communicate. Highly recommend her to any couples, families, or individuals seeking a new therapist :)
I think I got lucky because Sarah was my first ever therapist and I have been with her for almost 4 years. The most important thing is that she allowed me to feel comfortable and open up at my own pace. Shes a great listener and is able to empathize. Knows whenever I need advise vs just someone to listen to. Truly grateful for her
