Getting to know Sean Carroll

I am a psychodynamic psychotherapist in Denver, CO. I work primarily from the Lacanian and Object Relations orientations, helping patients gain insight into their unconscious patterns. I combine emotionally-focused and mindfulness therapies to allow for more immediacy in daily life and in session. In addition to individual work, I facilitate group psychotherapy, a deep engagement with other people looking for transformation together.

What should a new client know about working with you?

My style is committed to the psychodynamic orientation, integrating modern research and technique with classical knowledge about personality, the unconscious, and modern life. I try to be warm and engaging and help the patient connect past experiences with the present. To do this, I ask questions, allow for silence, and help patients reconstruct their current experiences with the hard-won insight from the past.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

We will begin our work together by getting clear on what's going on in life and what's holding you back from living a fuller life. As our work unfolds, I try to make connections and links across sessions to help us gain insight. I will also use techniques drawn from mindfulness and emotion-focused approaches to help the patient gain more immediate know-how in the present.
